Power steering line failure

Thought i would share this with you guys and gals, I had my expansion line fail ( part #3) right at the banjo bolt #6 on the tubing,There was no strain on the hose or tubing, nothing else was out of place, this maybe a weak spot on the part or just bad luck for me but it is something that probably should be checked during routine inspection. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...31&hg=32&fg=20

Dafuq?! Thanks for the heads up.

Curious if you happened to drive the car with no steering assistance? My MR2 (which was sold earlier this year) had manual steering and it actually felt really nice at the track. Wondering what our cars would feel like with manual steering

That is the first time I have seen a failure like that, but it is a known issue as far as weeping/leaks are concerned. Many folks have had that line replaced under warranty.

Yup I drove the car for a short distance around 2 or 3 right hand turns it was fairly hard, but nothing like my old falcon with armstrong steering.I would have driven it home if I knew I wouldn't f*ck up the pump.

IIRC BMW did a supersession on the part # due to failures in or around 2007. They were known to weep or leak in early Z4M's and e46 M3's.

How tough was this to change? Mine has the standard leak and I'm debating if I want to change it myself.

Good find! That access doesn't look too tight, but hopefully the OP will share the difficulty rating for the M Coupe/Roadster.

without a specially set up manual rack, just removing power steering from our cars would feel like crap

Had mine replaced on the 2006 E85 and on the 2008 E86. Both under warranty, leaking. Common problem I was told on M's.

From the close up of the boss on the banjo, it looks like there are some hacksaw marks about half way around. Did it crack and then did you saw off the rest of it?

Is the bracket at the bottom of the 'U' attached to the body of the car? The broken part of the banjo is, presumably, attached to the pump?

I wonder if this is fatigue...

It was a Fairly easy job to do,on a stock car should take around 2 hr to do.On my car i had to remove some of the plumbing that went from the SC to the inter cooler and the banjo bolt #6 was a PIA!

I guess that part 3 (expansion hose) is pretty much the culprit for all leaks and failures?!

You need to get pretty intimate under the car to see the power steering rack and hose and notice the leak. I saw it when I was re-routing my O2 wires. Slow leak but a leak nontheless and I think will replace it next year when the car comes out of storage

You have to remove the whole plastic undertray to see it. I noticed my leak when replacing a broken undertray.
