stock / facroty sub removal question

just a question but what is behind the stock sub box area? i want to remove the stock subs and open up holes into the trunk area. it is just particle board and carpet behind the sub compartments or metal and wires and what not... maybe even part of the fuel tank, i am not sure which is why i am asking here.

thanks for the info you guys that are smart on the z4

From what I remember there is a plate bolted to the bulkhead behind the plastic trim that the speakers attach to.
The bulkhead is metal of course and the area behind the trim is quite shallow
Search bmw z4 rear speaker removal in images for some good shots.

It does not really open to the trunk, that area sits lower than the trunk floor.

There is a foam "box" for the sub, it pulls out, then there is the metal framework between the trunk and the sub area. If I remember there are some small access areas, but nothing large, unless you want to remove some metal that may be structural...

Why don't you just remove one of the grills/subs and just look. That would be your best bet.
