Thumbs up E86 Z4M Coupe "The Ultimate Modern ///M Car"

From bimmerfile:
http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/12/31...-modern-m-car/

My favorite quote from the article: "This car was designed and engineered to be driven in anger"

The fact that the author kept calling it an E84 was extremely distracting and irritated me to no end.

Nice. But I still don't understand why the N54 gets the praise it does? It's fine and all for daily drivers...but it's no S54.

I like this Bimmerfile article better though...

Totally agree. It's still an immature engine design. I think BMW learned a lot in the 3 years or so they've been in American hands. It could evolve into something great but would need some S54 niceness, like solid lifters for one.

You guys are making me want to ditch the possibility of New (E89) Z4, and replace my Z4MR with a (leftover) Z4MC instead.

Why replace the Roadster with the coupe just take good care of the soft top and u would be happy for years. The only thing the new Z4 attracts me is that the interior is quiet nice but a little bit busy. Everything else isn't that impressive about the new z4 i mean its heavy, and the N54 is quiet boring despite the speed plus the new z4 isn't the best looking roadster and certainly looks too big and fat.

Why?

I really don't understand why the coupe gets so much praise and people turn their nose at the roadster,

Ive driven both, while not on a track but the feel is/was to me identical,
Felt the same throwing it into bends, and the coupe to me felt the same as the roadster with the top up, Very enclosed, and almost like your in a little capsule,
While Im not putting the coupe down the roadster is the best of both worlds and I feel people look down on it as most drop tops are heavier and slower than the coupe counterpart,
the Z4 chassis is the direct opposite, the roadster is lighter and the chassis stiffness I doubt anyone would feel the difference unless you were a professional race driver,

and Ive seen the roadsters on track and they track extremely well,
For me the roadster is both the coupe and the freedom of a convertible with the wind in your hair (or neck for old bald guys) and the majestic sound of that S54,
the coupe just drowns out a lot of noise thats well appreciated in the roadster,

While I do like the coupe, I am more than happy with the roadster,
I think with the roadsters top up, the Coupe wins on looks, But with the top down the roadster looks better than the coupe,

honestly id take either, (or both) but If I had to choose just one, I already have.

If I had a chance to buy another Z4, I'd forget about the E89 and get another E86.

Don't get me wrong...I am still thrilled with the Z4MR. But I see a rapidly fading opportunity to drive a (new, low-mileage) Z4MC now that they're out of production.

The Z4MR never stops amazing me every time I take it out for a 'spirited' drive - I know of no other drop top that has the same effect on me. Thinking I might like to go with the coupe just to round out the Z4M experience.

I would take an E86 M Coupe over an E89... but if I had to keep my si or get an E89... now that would be a toughy.

Well once the prices for the E89 come out I'm sure you'll know which one you want to have. Seems BMW is headed in a direction they cannot avoid... higher $$$. Shame, really, as it will kill sales.

E85/86 is still the winner in my books.

thats for sure, bmw is going for the luxury approach with the E89 giving it more options and a hardtop which will not only ruin the performance but make the price increase relatively.

I agree with most of you guys, but the looks on the new car are just amazing. But I hate how the new M v8 which they will probably offer on this car does not even comapre to the rawness and character of the s54. S54 FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG x 1 trizillion!!

The z4m roadster is just as capable as the coupe its all about your personal preference, i actually always wanted the roadster and for me, its a proper weekend toy, i love it, i wouldnt trade it for a coupe, i track my car reguarly and i can tell you not many cars get passed!! The z4 was a roadster designed from the off, its also one of the stiffest roadsters out their, so completely agree with you here!!!

I don't think it's a matter of capability as it is rarity. To the lay person, they see a Z4 roadster and it's just another z4 roadster. There are a zillion of them around. Whether it's an ///M or a 3.0 or whatever, it's all the same to them. Whereas if they see a coupe they automatically do a double take because they've never seen one before. There are even posts and stories around about Z4 roadster owners making the comment "I didn't even know they made a coupe".

To an enthusiast or at least someone who knows BMWs (and it's safe to say most BMW owners don't know much about BMWs), the M Roadster is a special vehicle just as capable as its solid-roofed sibling. To anyone else, it's just another Z4 (not convertible, not roadster, just Z4...because most people don't even know a coupe exists).

I'm sure there's truth to this. But I only had one person to please with my decision. Me.
