BMW Overfilled my S54 at inspection one.

Got to dealer to pick up car and noticed that the invoice was for 7 qts TWS. Figured they were just trying to get more money out of BMW NA. Got home and checked level. I cannot see were the oil even ends. They dropped 7qts in my car! So how serious is this in a semi-dry sump engine. Will it harm the motor to drive it back 5 miles to get the level corrected? Ive already took it out a romped on it a little after the valve adjustment too. How critical is it that I get level corrected. Every time I change it my old S54 I used 5.5.

I don't have a clue on an answer for you but I would get direction from the dealer and document it.

5.5 is definitely right though.

It's fine, just drain the excess.

Dealer overfilled my oil by half a quart and I drained it out through the dipstick tube with a syringe and long tube.

What scares me about the whole thing is that the "tech"'that overfilled the crankcase is also the same one that did the valve adjustment. Yowsa. I knew better than to go to my local dealer. I wanted to have them just dinthe basic service than take it to the city for the shims but the SA told me it must be done at inspection one and not later or BMW wouldn't cover it zsince it is part of inspection one. Not dogging my service dept at all as they have been super good in the past. Just seems boneheaded if it happens "alot"

maybe they had mistaken it for a 2.5 or 3 Im almost positive that the oil capacity for the 2.5/3 is 7 quarts

No way you can mistake an S54 for a M54 2.5. They don't look anything alike. Besides, they would never be adjusting valves on an M54.

They overfilled mine on my last one, I used the syringe and tube method to remove 3/4 liter. That will be the last free one I am able to get but it's fine with me.

5.5 is what I used last time I did it and it was perfect. Also when I purchased the car used they had done inspection 1 several thousand miles ago and it was overfilled when I bought it.

If you're lucky the tech didn't even try to do the shimming, they usually don't.

Just to be exactly correct.
5.5 Liters. not quarts

5.5 liters = 5.81 US quarts

So why do the BMW dealerships do this? I have noticed on here that I happens more that it does not. Also Mousitch, when you come by for me to see your new baby, show me how to see the oil level.

I don't think the non-Ms have a dipstick. On my old 3.0si you could only check the oil by pressing a button under the instrument cluster, IIRC.

Well, at least you got TWS. I've heard stories that people put in the wrong oil.

My Dealer lied about performing the valve adjustment with Inspection I AND overfilled my oil to 7 quarts.
On this last point, even the Service Manager argued confidently with me that he was "pretty sure it's 7, BMW doesn't make engines with a different filling quantity".

My 3.0si has only has one dipstick and that is behind the wheel in the drivers seat!
