From 335i to Z4M Coupe??
hey guys
i have a 2007 E92 335i with full M-Tech kit, JB4, AA DP's, BMW PE, ETS FMIC. it runs very strong and looks great: buuut: it's not my DD, i drive it just at the weekend. so it's a little garage queen. and for a fun-car i think it's too heavy and with no LSD it's not very funny to drive around corners. that's why i think to buy a Z4M Coupe. I know it would have less HP than my tuned 335i, but i think it's way more a sportcar than the 335i. it there any peoples who change from a 335i to a Z4MC?? or any Z4MC drivers which also drives a 335i? is it worth to change to the Z4MC?? thanks for your help! |

I previously owned a 2007 E90 335i with Vishnu Procede and traded it in for a 2008 Z4MC about 14 months ago with absolutely no regrets.
The motivating factors were that I've always salivated over the E86 since the concept photos were released, and that I was tired of the multiple HPFP failures on the 335. Just be sure you will be OK with the raw edginess of the Z4MC compared to the pampered E92 which is more of a GT cruiser. |

I had a 135, the wife drives a 2008 335 and I now have a 2008 Z4MC.
I love the power delivery of the 335, but I prefer the ZMC for everything else. The 335 just feels big and bulky compared to the Z.

I would say the z4m is raw, and more connected. Throttle response is SUPERB compared to the 335i. The only thing your REALLY going to miss (which I LOVE about my 335) is the torque. S54 really only starts moving in the higher RPMs, unlike the N54 which drops off in power in the higher revs. As far as handling your not going to be BLOWN away by the differnce you feel, but the differential helps a ton if you start to break loose. To be honest I have the feeling your ready for something new, I was in the same boat getting rid of my LSB e46 m3 and into a e92 335. All of them are amazing cars, but after we own them for a few years we want something else. Good luck, if you end up getting a z4m get the coupe Travis |

Hi,
I drove a new Z4 35i and I have a Z4M roadster, and what I can tell you is that from the engine point of view, even if the 35i have great performances, I prefer the S54 engine, which is more fun to drive. It is more reliable, and the sound is better according to me. So if I were you, I would change the 335i for a Z4M! |

only way you'll know is if you go take one for a test-drive

At first, I was in love with my friends 335. But the more I drove his, the more and more comparisons I kept doing with my M. I was jelous of the better navigation and radio and other things in his car, but the thrill and excitement of driving the M does not compare. I can throw the car around and it responds so quick. Im starting to love the simplicity of the M without all the gadgetry just because of the smile it brings on my face when I drive. The only thing now that im jelous of is his stock speaker system. Im thinking of adding 6x9 in the trunk just to fill the mid range sound. I already added a sub and that doesnt do anything for my love of music.

I had a 335 with Procede at one point. The torque is wonderful at low revs but the car runs out of wind higher up; just the opposite of the S54. The throttle response is much better in the Z4M. You can also run the Z4M at the track on warm/hot days w/o going into limp mode. (I didn't track my 335, but the two guys I spoke to at the track on Monday were happy it was only 58 degrees as both confirmed limp mode at least a couple of sessions during hotter weather which cut their time on the track short.)
These are very different cars. The 3 series is above all a GT, much more comfortable, newer tech, etc. The Z4M is much more raw, much more engaging, and much more targeted to a no-nonsense/frills approach to fun. As a touring car or car for long trips the 335 has the Z4M beat in terms of ride comfort, seat comfort, storage space, and so on. The 335 is also a lot easier to drive. Pretty forgiving and easy to get a lot of of the car IMO. The Z4M by constrast is much more difficult to drive well--it doesn't drive like any other BMW I've ever hopped in (and I've driven a lot of them). The car demands full attention, will oversteer if asked on throttle and lift, and is not very forgiving of mistakes (braking deep into a corner for example) that are easier to "get away with" in the 3 series. These, to my mind, are positives. It's a car that demands more of the driver to really get the full performance out of the car and it richly rewards the driver when the car is really "driven". I wouldn't trade mine for anything currently on the market under 100K--even then there's just "something" about this car that makes we it. A day at the track just makes that even more apparent to me. We (the car and I) have so much fun at the track (and on back roads--track is way more fun however). Like Vinnie said, go drive one. And not in the city--it's not a car that's shines there at all. Mine has enough low end torque to satisfy my needs. My last car was putting down around 300 ft lbs of torque at the wheels at around 3k RPM. The M does not quite have that much power down low but it's got enough to not be an issue.

i went from a stock 335i to a stock (now lightly modded) z4m coupe, and the experience is quite different. the 335i is a performance-oriented gran tourer foremost, and it does so with aplomb. it was never designed to be a sports car, or by definition, to evoke those same emotions and ooze the soul of one. it is perfect for four, comfortably gets up and goes (so to speak) and works well both on the highways as well as in the city.
the z4m coupe, though, is as many have already pointed out, raw. it was designed from the outset to be a sports car, and it evokes all the emotion and embodies all the soul of one with aplomb. it demands respect to be driven to its limits and rewards the driver who can master it. in my book, tt equates to the more rewarding drive. i don't miss my 335i apart from the seating for four and the nice low end punch. |

The e90/2 is not a sports car chassis, including the M3. If you want raw get the e86m....period

thank you for all the inputs!
i go test drive a Z4MC tomorrow, so i can see if i like the feeling of the car. i would update here after the test-drive. btw: low end torque is nice for daily driving, but if i wanna have some fun, i shift down an the RPM's are all the time over 3500.... |

Came from a 335i with tune/dps...torque in the z4m is definitely not as much but I've yet to find myself struggling for torque/power in daily driving...

^^ drove a friends 335i (with software updates from Dianan) and another friends M3. Man, they are nice cars. I could own either of these and be happy with them.
Good luck with your choice. You really can't go wrong with the 335i or the M3.
