What is a hood scoop and what does it do??

Hi, i am definitely a newb when it comes to anything about cars, and was wondering what a air ram/scoop does??
Ive seen a few threads on people installing them and it got me curious.
Im talking about the thing that i have seen people install right behind their front bumper grille if scoop isnt the thing im talking about.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Blake

Garage List
It just makes the air coming in the grill go straight to the air intake. About the same as a cold air intake but probably a little more proficient and safer.

There is also a Dinan one for the 2.5 and 3.0.

It runs from about $225 - $350 depending on where you can find it online, and seems to work just as effectively as the RPI-made scoop for the M.
