to suck or not to suck...
I'm about ready to do my 3rd oil change, I have bought the suction tool to suck oil from the dipstick, works great but I feel like I'm not getting it 100% empty. I bough the new drain plug and I just wonder if I'm being OCD by wanting to drain the oil from from under the car, my thinking is that I will get all the oil and whatever debris is in there...I'm I over thinking this?

I get more oil out of it with my Mityvac than I do by draining...

If you're going to replace the drain plug seems like a waste of time to suck.
What kind of drain plug? I put in a magnetic Dimple plug (SS M12X1.5X12) from BavAuto. I was surprised to see how much swarf came out the next change. Been clean since. I don't know if it was just 100k miles worth of rings, or bits of my broken vanos exhaust hub. Nice to know it's not in there any more.

well I got bored and drained the oil, turns out it must have been done this way before b/c the plastic cap was missing, and BMW never replaced the drain bolt with a new one ( still hex OEM plug)
All and all, not bad I feel better about it knowing that I got 99% of the oil removed...on to the next project..

I believe only M3's had the plastic cover over the oil drain bolt. My M Coupe didn't have one and TIS infers that prying off the cover is e46 only. I've got a mightyvac rig. I usually alternate between sucking and draining.

Wasn't sure, I found a diy and it said remove cover, wasn't there..but I think I'm going to alternate between sucking and draining...wasn't too bad getting under there and draining..

my 3.0i has a door under there, it catches oil fantastically and blows sh*t all over the floor!

This plastic cover?
I have one. It didn't have one when I bought it used. I expect mechanics don't bother to put them back on.
