So, you have an SMG? I have an SMG transmission. When I put it into manual, it ONLY downshifts for me.

Automatic, Manual, and Paddle shift? I thought that meant SMG. Do you have a clutch pedal? ()

I've got 3.0 Si with auto trans and it needs to have the shift lever moved to the left to enter manual mode. It will then hold in gear until stoping but also has throttle kick-down and upshift at redline. It is really just a gear holding feature for cornering and with torque converter locked feels like a manual gearbox. The sport button changes the shift points but is still full auto like in "D" unless the lever is moved over. Paddles are just for convenience and work secondary to the selected mode.

Hope this helps and make some sense!

Hi buddies.

You're totally right Pete C, but you also have a full manual mode on auto trans, when the shifter is moved to left, it don't have to shift gears automatically

SMG was only available for '03 and '04 (maybe for '05 too) and was discontinued after that. The auto box (like mine) up to the facelift for '06 was just a regular auto with steptronic mode where you can shift up or down using the gear lever. In 06 they added paddle shifters to the auto box. In all cases, the auto box gets sharper response and later shift points with teh sport button engaged.

Is there a link to your youtube video?

From what I gather in this thread, this is the SMG transmission, and very few (if any) of us have that transmission. If this is indeed the SMG, you might get more input from an E46 M3 crowd since the SMG box was used quite a bit on the E46 M3.

If I had to guess, I'd think the module/controller has issues, or the shift lever isn't triggering the right mode (manual vs. auto) which could be a contact/switch issue in the shifter mechanism. Since it works sometimes, and since modules using fail 100%, it may be a shift level/contact/switch issue.

Access to a diagnostic tool to read any codes the ECU is recording would go a long way to helping you figure out where the issue is.

^ I think it's not the same as the E46 M3s SMGII - I think it's closer to the old E36 original SMG box so they might be better able to help you

It's not smg, smg was only available in early model Z4. Late model autos are similar to the tiptronic trans from the e46 non-m.

Ok. Did not know the SMG years.

Still think it's either a module or some kind bad contact or component in the shifter module/mechanism. That's my best guess. Diagnostic scan is best way to not guess.

Indeed, it's not a SMG, just automatic with shiftpaddles.
