Need a Thin Walled 17mm Socket

My current one isn't getting the job done and still leaves nicks on my lugholes. Seems like Sunex is the popular choice but I've read mixed reviews. Can anyone recommend a quality piece that has protective coating on the outside with 1/2" drive?

I just get a good quality socket then add shrink tube to the outside.

Good idea. In a pinch blue painter's tape works well too.

I was in the same predicament as you and bought a sleeved socket like those mentioned above which ended up being too thick. I searched hard on eBay and found a super-thin-walled socket that worked great. It might even have been a spark plug socket as some applications require that type of thin-walled socket for the plugs. I have this one that has the extension integral to it. It's fit OEM BMW wheels so far with no issue, and the protective sleeve can be slipped off if you find you're in an extra tight lug hole.

I did the exact same thing. Shrink tube. I also don't let the power tool spin too much. I put my hand on the socket and stop the socket from spinning after it has loosened the lug nut. Then I use my left hand to support the socket and my right hand to unscrew the lug nut the rest of the way. It's ridiculous but it works.

I used to use a set of Griot's Garage thin-walled deep sockets:

Worked great, except there's a plastic/rubber lining on the inside. When I switched over to studs it prevents the nuts from fully seating in the socket (the studs interfere with he plastic/rubber lining on the inside of the socket). I tried a couple of impact sockets and it would rub against the holes in the aftermarket wheel. This is the one I use now (in conjunction with a small 1/2" extension):

https://sktools.com/shop/34267-17-mm...ct-socket.html

Seems to clear both the Apex wheel and OE wheel lug holes fine. With the shortest 1/2" extension attached it gives the torque wrench plenty of clearance from the wheel's spokes. One of the thinnest walled impact socket I've seen.

I bought Home Depot's house brand, Husky, 3-piece wheel protector impact socket set (17 mm, 19 mm, 21 mm) for $30. The 17 mm socket fits the wheel studs on my stock ///M wheels just fine.

I have electrical tape wrapped around mine. Literally lasts years with very frequent tire changes (3 cars with track and winter and summer tire swaps).

Yep. Just be certain you keep the wrench perpendicular to the socket.
