Full Review - Tial QR Recirculating Bypass Valve

Tial QR Recirculating Bypass Valve

This mod is a forced induction only mod. The Bosch bypass valve (henceforth, BPV) that came with the VF supercharger kit functioned fine but was completely silent. After taking delivery of my G-Power Z4M, I began to crave the open dump, blow off valve (BOV) sound that came from extra air being dumped. Even though the G-Power Z4M came with a BPV, it sounds like it has a BOV. I didn’t think this was possible. So, I bought the Tial QR BPV to try and recreate that sound.

In the sense of getting the BOV sound, I failed. The Tial QR is just as quiet as the Bosch BPV. This has to do with intake routing more than the bypass itself. The only way to get a BOV sound on a VF kit is to install a BOV.

The Tial QR is a high quality piece.

It’s a work of art that I’m disappointed I can’t see when I pop the hood, due to its location. The install itself required some custom work with PVC (painted black in the picture). The Tial QR is meant to be welded into place, but with the VF kit using molded plastic piping, we had to make an adapter to get it to work.

Overall, I don’t know if I would do this mod again, just because it didn’t accomplish what I wanted out of it (boost venting noise) while requiring some custom work. Great product, wrong application. The quality of the piece impressed me, so I will absolutely buy another Tial product – likely a Tial Q (BOV) for my ESS Z4M. www.extremepsi.com has good technical support, and they answered my questions right away, even post-purchase. If I choose to upgrade the VF kit, then this piece would become critical, so it provides some peace of mind that it will hold together if I bump up the boost.

please try it on the ESS car id love to hear the less with a BOV... i often think about going for the turbosmart dual purpose unit, thats a bypass and BOV in one ( vents at high pressure, re-circs are medium to low) with a nice adjustable color so no spring changes needed, its a very high quality unit but in recent times I've learned to just be happy with what i have until it needs work and in total honestly, the VT valve sound shite but performs perfectly and is a solid unit. I like the fact that all the air is being pumped back into the system, surely that can only be a good thing on a slow boosting centri setup.

Josh,
I can also attest to the quality of the Tial products.
Really impressive but not cheap at all.
Having talked to Mike I believe at ExtremePSI he recommended the
TIAL QRJ BLOWOFF/BYPASS VALVE #27564.
It has screw in inlet and outlet that can be sized or configured to whatever system, Turbo or S/C that you have.I went with 1" nipple on both ends as that was what came on the VF Kit.
Do not know if it sounds any different but the BPV supplied with the VF kit was defective.
I can give feed back in the spring.

It really is a shame it isn't more visible.

Have you thought about disconnecting the BPV's discharge line, and capping off the connection on the intake side? That might give you an idea of how a BOV would sound.

As for the extra air going into the intake, I don't want it. It's been compressed so it's hot. I might install an IAT gauge just to see how much intake temps are raised with a BPV versus a BOV.

Good info as always Dave! I was thinking about going for a red or blue BPV, but I was concerned about it getting scratched up.

If I had known you were having issues with your VF-supplied BPV, I could had sent you my unused one! It's sitting in the garage collecting dust.

^ great idea
I might copy that idea to see how much the WMI drops the IAT's

I purchased a VF570 kit this winter and having that nice BOV sound is something I am after as well. My kit isn't installed yet, but I actually just ordered a TiAL for it. I went straight to VF and the sold it to me direct - $300.

Interestingly, it's just the Q model - not the QR.

Hoping it will give the sound we are looking for??

I should add - VF said that the tune would be altered to accommodate the TiAL when I get my kit installed.

The M kits are a little different as they utilize a MAFless tune... also known as Alpha-N, where the throttle plate position angle (alpha) and rpm (n) are used to determine load, not the MAF readings. The reason I can't do a BOV with the 3.0i is because all of the air has to be accounted for that's read by the MAF sensor. When boosted air is vented to the atmosphere, the car doesn't know where it went, and it will screw up all kinds of things. With a MAFless tune, it doesn't matter.

The Q is a BOV, the QR is a BPV. I think the R stands for recirculating.

its been cooled??? the BPV is after the intercooler so its dumping air thats in the intake, so whether its used y the engine or the supercharger whats the issue?? not sure i agree on that point... your dumping cooled air back into the system.

It's gone through the intercooler, sure, but that doesn't mean it's anywhere near ambient. The most an intercooler could ever cool the air is down to ambient, if it was 100% efficient. The air will get a little cooler by expanding after it's released back into the intake from the BPV discharge, but I really doubt it will be as cool as the fresh air coming in.
