Question stud kit & new front rotors?

Hi, if I have my stud kit installed, to install new front brake rotors, will I have to remove the stud kit?

I ask, cos I am thinking of using locktite on the kit, which will be a pain to remove again...

Hope someone can shed some light on this, otherwise I will wait to install the apex kit.

You'll need to transfer the studs over to new rotor.

Totally wrong. Studs are installed into the hub, and the rotor slips over them. The only time you would need to remove the studs is if you changed hubs. Also, if you need to adjust your parking break, you would need to remove one stud from the rear, as the adjustment is accessible via the lugbolt hole. But generally you do not need to make that adjustment.

I believe studs are installed in the rotors for 90's GM trucks, off the top of my head. Nothing made by BMW (or other recent German vehicles), as far as I know.

You can make parking brake adjustment without removing a stud, although it IS a challenge.

When I changed out the rear rotors for the RB 2 piece floaties, I had to re-adjust the parking brake shoes. The only way to do it is to remove the rotor, figure out which way the wheel turns to tighten/loosen, then adjust 5 clicks at a time, put rotor back on, pull the hand brake, and see if the rotor turns in neutral (while the whole backend is up in the air, meaning the other wheel can't be on the ground). Once it's tight enough not to turn the rotor when the parking brake is pulled up 3 clicks, and the rotor spins freely when released, you can tighten the parking brake cable from underneath the parking brake handle to fine-tune.

PLEASE use red Loctite on the install. You never want to risk the studs backing out. Better to have to deal with a PITA removal than an unintended one...

Yes.

And if you ever need to remove them after red locktite, just heat them up with a torch for a bit and it will break the bond.

Other than racing, I'm not sure what a stud kit does for you. Yes, I understand installing a wheel on the front hub is a pain to line up the bolt holes, but BMW makes a tool (a long shaft), and several aftermarket companies make a similar tool, that fits into the bolt hole on the hub and allows the wheel to be slid over the shaft and it lines up the bolt holes once the wheel fits onto the hub center. Older BMWs, when they actually had spare tires, always came with this tool.

The BMW P/N is 71111093774 It's about $12.

I never understood why it's a pain to install a wheel. You just hang the wheel on the hub and rotate it until you align the holes

As for studs, my primary reason was for cosmetics. Aftermarket wheels look better with a nice shiny lug/stud combo.

how do you rotate the fronts & keep the hubs from turning?

From what I remember, the wheel turned before the hub would. But I do grease the rotor after learning the lesson of a seized wheel years back.
