So to be Owner

I have just bought a 08 Z4 M roadster with 24,000 miles on it. I got it for 29k and i pick it up sunday. Is there anything to maintain with the soft top, any problems to expect? I have done a lot of research on this forum and haven't found anything to expect. I am really excited, and thanks for the info ahead of time.

Awesome!!!!

Congratulations on getting such a fine and fun car!!

With respect to the soft top, if you poke around here you will see that folks recommend an annual or maybe twice yearly application of stuff called RaggTop. I think I spelled that right. Anyway, the stuff maintains the roof's material, cleans it and keeps up the water protection. There is also another product which does the same thing. Garaging your car when not in use or covering it when its parked for a while will protect the roof from the sun, environmental contaminants and the bane of car fans everywhere - bird poop! I think the OEM BMW covers are supposed to be very good.

I think there is a drain system for the roof motor that can be checked from time to time and cleared if it gets blocked, although I haven't yet done that. For daily use, the roof is generally quite reliable.

Cheers!!!

I just keep mine out of the rain. No worry of motor damage by water. That does keep it in the garage a lot though, Raggtopp is a good product. Might try 303 as I hear it keeps the top a little darker.

I highly recommend the Raggtopp products. When I brought my 06 home for the first time last June, the top looked clean, but I wasn't sure if the top was completely water proofed. After using the Raggtopp cleaner, the black top looked much blacker. Then after carefully following the instructions on the protectant, making sure to let the first coat dry before applying the second, the top looked a rich, almost shiney black and water beaded very nicely.

Congratulations on the new ride! Ditto on the Raggtop. I also use a car cover if I have to park outdoor in the AZ sun.

Raggtopp is pretty much internet only purchase from what I found. I believe the drain DIY is in the DIY section. Most issues with this car can be found by using the search feature. I think there are a couple of good write ups. Here is a general Google search. A few good links here and some other diy forums....

Try properautocare.com to order the supplies. I ordered from them last week and received the items the next day as they are Tampa based. I ordered 303 supplies for my top as they were running a sale last week but they also carry RaggTopp.

I couldn't find any write ups besides this one
and the pictures aren't there so it is hard to see what he is working on.

- Raggtop twice a year
- Check the engine mounts before you buy (any knocking sound over bumps or when turning)
- Clean the drainage holes once a year (DYI)

Enjoy Apart from minor squeaks and rattles since our cars were crappy built in SC, the M roadster is a very reliable car!

All Z4s were assembled in SC. Many of the parts were made in Germany.

All Z4's made for the 2003 through 2008 model years; including roadsters coupes and M variants of those; were assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA.

Cheers!
