Union Jack flying....reflected in the window.
_DSC0618 by blacktan92, on Flickr This is Ontario, Canada. It was common to fly the Union Jack then. The current Canadian Flag dates to the term of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Date escapes me...

As a young lad my Family travelled a lot. My Father retired as a Captain in the Royal Canadian Navy. I was born in Victoria on Canada's west coast. Lived a few years in Halifax on the east coast.
By Grade 11 I had attended 12 schools! In Grade 8 we moved back to Canada from the Unites States (Maryland, then Virginia). I attended a 1 room school! This was in 1959. The school was much as this is here. The furniture was the same, except we had ink wells in the desk. (Ink wells were where some boys dunked the long hair of the pretty girls sitting immediately in front of them.) Rick I truly appreciate the incredible stories you tell. I promised to photograph the inside of the Britannia School. My apologies for taking so long. DaveL Toronto

Thanks for the photos of the Britannia School. It's great that it's still being used as an on-the-spot history lesson for kids. It's also interesting that the design of this school is so similar to the ones that were dotted all over Pennsylvania. Not exactly the same, but a very similar general configuration and appearance. You were a pretty well-traveled student. I lived in Raleigh, North Carolina and Morgantown, West Virginia before starting school in Frederick, Maryland. In Frederick, I went to one elementary school, one junior high school, and two high schools (a new one opened up for my senior year), but that was it. In the third grade, the Frederick classrooms were so overcrowded from the post-World War II "baby boom" that a local playground field house was converted for school use. So, I too attended a one-room schoolhouse for a year! Thanks again for the photos. Rick |
