After I got used to the car I haven't had it happen but that may be because I tend to wait a split second after letting off at 8k to pull the shifter to second. In my case it almost sounded like the selector made it past the syncro but didn't engage with the actual gear. It was a high pitch grind.

have to admit, the synchros have a job... and smooth shifting has rewards.

I've also noticed that. Once your at redline in first, clutch to the floor, if wait the extra half a second and then slam 2nd. It won't do it. However it needs to be said that our 50-60k$ sports cars shouldn't have this problem whatsoever. I feel this is a synchro issue. I've had syncrho issues in other cars and this problem is very similar. Going to do an amsoil tranny fluid swap. Amsoil syncrho mesh fluid.

I can confirm that MVF4Rrider's technique WORKS (Firm pressure to the left all the way through the shift).

By making this minor change to your driving style, when you want to you can now shift at the redline with confidence.

Thank you for sharing this secret.

My car is at 7,000 miles and it was broken in following the BMW guidelines to the letter. It would grind now if I don't use the method conveyed to me. But I guess at 10,000 miles it will magically correct itself? Doubt it. Ultimately I don't abuse it and the few times I experienced the grind I wasn't revving it into oblivion.
Mine now has about 19K and it is better than it was at 10K. What they told you in Germany is exactly correct and I hope everybody is doing this when they shift. If you were going to tell someone else where 2nd is, wouldn't you say "back and toward the driver?" If you think this while driving you will be doing it correctly. Mine would probably go to 4th if I didn't keep the pressure to the left on it.

I think you may have the definitive answer and this is probably why some people don't have a problem and others do.

In my old car(07 civic si, yea I know, no comparison) everyone was getting 1-2 shift problems at high rpms(we have same 8k rev limit). Ours was due to the mounts being too soft and it moving the motor and tranny enough to cause slack in linkages and mess up the shifts. Also on our cars if it mounts were not replaced or a engine torque dampner wasn't installed, after grind after grind happened, irreversible damage was done to the trannies and they had to be replaced for the problem to go away.

But I'm currently waiting on my M to arrive with 14k miles on the clock and I'll give some feedback soon.

Maybe we should do a group buy for new tranny mounts.
Rouge Engineering has them for like $55

If it would help with the occasional grind then i'd be interested in a group buy (if shipping them out here isnt horrendously expensive of course).

Depends if its a problem with tranny movement causing the grind then the stiffer mounts could help a lot.

If its a syncro issue it might not help as much.
Dont think shipping would be too much since its a relatively small package.

I have some on order from LeatherZ and will have them installed week after next; my local Indie shop did mention the black mounts over the urethane, I guess the noise and vibration in the Z is more pronounced than other BMWs.

I agree, but the transmission is so inconsistent and I would think a syncro issue would cause the issue each and every time. For instance, on my daily commute, I have to make a hard left onto a rotary and uphill, so I hit the left hard and apply power, the 1->2 is butter smooth. It seems when I'm tossing the car left hard, the shift is sweet, so I suspected the tranny or engine movement. This issue is also worse as the warm weather approaches ... rubber gets softer and more pliable in the heat???

Figured I'd start with the tranny as it's inexpensive to try regardless and BMW tranny mounts aren't known to be the best.

Have you guys with the grinding 2nd gear issue had the motor mount bolts addressed?
I wonder if there's a connection?

I've had mine checked repeatedly at Indie and dealership visits, I guess I have the ones made after the SIB was produced (Aug/2008), and hence the reason I'm changing the transmission mount bushings this week or early next week, probably nothing to do with the lack of smoothness (I have no grinding/crunching), but rather to do with the inconsistency with which it shifts.

I took my M-R out yesterday to heat it up with revs and engine braking. The shifts were silky. as 1-2-3 were equally slick with downshifts included.
I was really looking for the symptom, but it just wasn't an issue for me.

Had the Rogue transmissions mounts installed today; techs took one look and compared the ones removed and the new ones were: "nice, beefy". I find the shifting is improved and especially when braking and moving the lever, especially the 3->2 where I've been denied a couple of times. That is now gone. This isn't a cure for the notchiness, but it is shifting consistent now. The original bushings were the typical BMW hourglass rubber, you could compress the rubber with your fingers whereas the Rogue mounts are still neoprene rubber, they are far stiffer and should last much longer.

No, the car doesn't need any type of ssk as far as I'm concerned; at least for me, the throws are nice and firm. The Whalen helps a lot with the nice firm shifts.

This grind that everyone is talking about, is it actual noise that u hear from tranny or a grinding feel on the shifter when u shift?

I agree that it doesn't need to be shorter.
I just wondered if the improved pivot bushings & mechanicals would gain similar improvements as the changing tranny bushings.

Both.
Plus rejection of 3-2 downshifts.
You will know when/if it happens.

I've been lucky so far myself.

What I am experiencing is the grinding feel on the shifter. Only way for me to not have that is to shift slower. Is there any other tehnique that I can use to prevent this grind besides shifting slower as it is kind of defeats the purpose of driving a high performance sports car.
