Winter Tire Questions
Hey guys - couple of quick questions.
I'm looking for a winter tire/wheel setup. This is what I'm ready to purchase from TireRack: 2x 17x7.5 Sport Edition F5 Silver Painted Front (20mm offset) 2x 17x7.5 Sport Edition F5 Silver Painted Rear (+40mm offset) 4x 225/45R17 Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 Total, with shipping, is about $1,300. First, is 17x7.5 (I'm going to confirm that these will fit over the stock rotors on the M) better than, say, an 18x8 square setup? I chose 17 because the tires are cheaper and more widely available. Second,I keep getting warning messages about TPMS sensors being required for installation. Is this an actual requirement, or is it just a liability thing? Will most tire places install without? If not... any recommendations on where to get a cheap set? Thanks all! |

Your offsets look off. 20mm in front is aggressive but may still work, 40mm in rear with 7.5" wheels is going to look... bad.
Never heard of the TPMS requirement or the liability reasoning. Then again, I get my mounting done at mom & pops.

As of 2007 all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. are required to have TPMS installed. Most manufacturers were in compliance in 2006.

2006 Z4s have the feature, but it works by measuring differences in rotational speeds through the ABS system, not through those little devices on the wheels of 2007 and later cars.

zBone, can you hold out for a few more weeks? I'm expecting to buy a set of used wheels/tires with TPMS in the next few weeks, to use for winter. I have an 06 though, and was planning on pulling the TPMS out.
If you're interested, I'd be willing to sell you the TPMS sensors for $90 shipped (again, once I have the wheels/tires and pull them out). |

I've heard about the liability issue. If you are supposed to have TPMS and don't and then get into an accident that is your fault and could have been prevented by proper tire inflation. You could get smacked. Up to the owner, but, probably very, very unlikely. But it's out there.

Along the same lines... Do you have to step down to 17s to run winter tires? I may be moving up north soon, and was considering just slapping them on my OEMs - will the bigger tires have clearance issues?

BTW - anyone have opinions on the blizzak studless ice/snow tires (WS70) versus the blizzak 'performance winter' tires (LM60)? |

WS are for your hardcore ice/snow while sacrificing a little on dry. LM is better performance on dry while sacrificing a little on snow (it's like the "all-season" for winter tires). Personally, I prefer the extreme WS to save my ass if necessary because my car is my DD; I don't drive aggressively on dry when I have winter tires on.

You can run 235/40/18 Winters on all 4 corners on the OE wheels.

On the Z4M a good 17" winter setup (assuming the wheels fit over the rotors) would be 225/50-17 with about 40mm offset in the front and 20mm in the rear.
The 225/50-17 tyre size is closest in diameter to the OEM 225/45-18 front and 255/40-18 rear sizes. For the past 5 winters I've been very happy with my 225/45-18 Sottozero setup on 18x8 OZ Ultraleggera wheels with 40/20mm F/R offsets. |

For tires, I'm pursing a couple of leads on some used LM-25s. I'm expecting to have the new set of wheels in 3-4 weeks; I'll pull the TPMS sensors immediately and have them ready to go for you. |
