Just got me a 3.91 R&P
Yep. I pulled the trigger. There's a guy over on E46Fanatics that has been selling slightly used 3.91 ring and pinion sets for pretty much half the price they go for at Turner. They're used by a race team, I believe, for a few events and then get yanked as part of their maintenance procedures for the season. Apparently, the ones he sells are completely unblemished and like-new but I'll certainly confirm that when I have the part in front of me. I got one that's polished.
Here's the link... http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=668526

Two advantages cited are that polished runs cooler due to lower friction and you can skip the 1200-mile break-in period since any metal shavings were polished off. That they run quieter is up for debate.

With just the gears, it will require removing and rebuilding the diff with the new gears inside - not for amateurs, usually runs $700 or so at a shop and takes a day or two.
Or you can buy a diff pre-built from most tuners for $2500 (Dinan, AC Schntizer, Hartge, Hamann) and install takes a couple of hours. The route you're taking is lots cheaper. |
