how many of you have a short shift kit installed?

I know for the 3-series, they are quite popular in the mod community...It was the best mod I had done on my 323i. but it doesn't seem like many Z4M drivers have them installed.

is there a better quality ball pivot in the M cars, or the shift linkage is already short?

Many of us have done a simple short knob. The linkage is short enough and a SSK adds risk of straining the gears. Our transmissions require patience when shifting anyway.

Ain't that the truth brother! As my wife puts it "when you buy a Z4M you join the secret priesthood of the holy shifter". Kind of like the Masons but much more selective and secretive.

"Thou shalt not shift from 1st to 2nd with extreme haste, and thou shalt always pauseth and feel if the time hast come to pull into 2nd lest thou grind, and thou shalt pulleth to the left as thy hand shiftith...."

THOU SHALT NEVER BUCKETH THY CAR!

And there was much rejoicing. And the LORD did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and....

Really. We all wear hooded robes that hide our faces and we have a ring and secret handshake and everything. Membership is more important than your manual.

OK, being serious for a minute (but only a minute). The best mod we did to my coupe was the transmission mount replacement. For my car we went with Rogues, but Finnegan just got UUC (red)s and he's having them installed this week. We'll have a compare and contrast soon (track day on Friday!).

Ok, dumb question, lets try this one. Where can I find a short shift knob that is lighted like the OEM. And is that the same as a "ZHP" Knob I have been reading about?

Best regards.

Didn't mean to flip, sorry.

Yes, LeatherZ makes a lighted one; Turner sells non-lighted ones, there are other vendors as well. Lots of folks here haven't bothered and got the ZHP w/o lights; some have modded them to include lighting themselves. I seem to recall a DIY but can't seem to find it now.

Search around a bit and I'm sure you can dig up what you need.

ZHP lighted will cost a pretty penny compared to unlighted, hard to justify for cheapasses like me. You may be better off spending the $100 on tranny mounts.

BTW- I KNEW we Z4M owners were a cult. Can we write an official Z4M owners handbook? Thou shall not illuminate the evening with 4 eyes, but merely 2.

Cult? Why yes, indeed, we are! It's nice to be an official member and all now too!

I'm total cheapass on this stuff as well. I'll probably get the el-cheapo knob or wait until someone sells one here used. UUC mounts go in Tuesday and I'm doing those ahead of the knob--don't want any denied 3rd to 2nd shifts or worse.

Most SSK Kits for the E46, for example, are modeled off of the Z3M Shifter.

So basically, our throws are the level of a comparable SSK kit

I did a SSK mod - used UUC's one.

Very nice throw - no 'loose' shifting now. Love the tight feeling over stock.

That's the best thing about the SSK mod. Throws are also shorter now - overall, you should if you want a nicer shifter. It's not hard to use at all as well.

I've got the UUC Evo3 kit too, i think it's a worthwhile mod. Makes the throw slightly shorter and the action crisper. Could be a bit cheaper but overall i like it.

Agree, huge improvement in feel. I'd like to know if the reds or the reds with the cap have an increase in the NVH.

I got in on the AS group buy, throw was never an issue. But the fact that the oem was a bit sloppy for my taste. The UUC/RE trans mounts definitely help but the AS kit really made night/day difference.

1 on the AS kit!! I am in love with mine. I changed out the tranny mounts and removed the CDV while I was at it as well. So my impressions may e exaggerated.

However, I have yet to have a 1-2 grind since I've done these mods...
