Happy Birthday -- New Shoes!

So, based on my VIN, my production date was March 23, 2006, which means in a couple of days, my Z4MR will be 10 years old, and I can join the Decade Club.

I checked my tires, and my front tires are original to the car. At now 35K miles, they still have tread, but the mfg date on the tires is 0106, which means my car's front tires are a decade old. Yikes. I think I need to take care of this sooner rather than later, especially considering I was going to head to the twisties in the mountains this weekend. Looks like for my car's 10th birthday, it's getting a pair of new shoes. Pilot Super Sports here we come.

Even at 10 years old, our cars still turn heads. Hell, I've been surprised by how many people think it's brand new, but then again, there aren't a ton of Z4 coupes running around where I live.

You won't be disappointed in the PSS, I've been running them since I got my Moupe 4 years ago. Not the best grip in colder weather, but man they are sweet when it's warm.

Excellent choice! Great tire.

Once the molding is off the tires you'll be amazed at how much better these are.

Thanks, guys. Do you find that most tire places do a proper job with installation, or do I need to guide them to use a torque wrench and set to a specific torque? Do you think tire places that don't normally deal with BMWs even understand that our Zs use bolts and not lug nuts? I hate to sound like a worry wart, but I can't tell you how many times I've had to intervene with so-called experts. Just curious what your experience has been.

Thanks!

I don't think you'll run into a problem. I'd be more worried about the guys not taking proper care of my rims during tire installation -- so easy for them to scratch or dent or scuff the lips of your rim if they are being careless.

WHS...

If you're extremely concerned with absolute perfection is concerned as far as tire mounting/balancing, seek out a good local performance shop that has the latest and greatest Hunter equipment to road force balance your setup.

Aside from that, any decent shop that is careful with customers wheels should do the trick.

Thanks for the reassurances on the tire installation, and I agree No_Dominion. Maybe it is a benefit of the Bangle design that it was perhaps ahead of its time. It has not aged like other 10 year old models have.

I think you're right about that. The E85/86 design (to me, at least,) is just a great combination of classic and contemporary. It isn't too rounded, not too angular, nothing that screams any one generation of vehicle more than any other, so it is able to look at home today just as much as it did a decade ago. If it weren't for BMW changing up the design of the slats in the kidney grilles, updated halo designs, and front fascia element changes for M cars over the past years, it truly could be a design that rolled out just yesterday. Massive difference from the Z3 which just screams late 90s.
