I purchased my own fabric and after having screwed it up myself took headliner insert to my local auto upholsterer, he charged me $100 cash, did a nice job.

For that price I’d consider shipping mine to your upholstery guy lol

Ended up being worse than I thought. I realized it was only held in because of the rubber moulding and pillars supporting the fabric. But with the headliner fully removed, it was apparent all the foam turned into dust. Take my word, if your liner is sagging even a little don’t bother trying to “reheat” the glue with a steamer - it’ll most definitely make it worse.

Only took 15 mins to pull it out, and happy to report no broken clips though I will still replace with new ones because the old one were “fatigued” during removal. On the bright side, I have an extra inch of headroom for my upcoming track event.

I didn’t realise sagging headliners were a already a thing on these cars. I’ve had my fill of dealing with this crap on old mk2 golfs, the last thing I need is for it to happen on the z4!

Better than a torn leaky top, but if you keep your car indoors, generally shouldn’t be an issue.

Not necessarily the cure. My car has been garage kept nearly it's entire life in SoCal dry weather. It didn't helped in my case

I'm a bit afraid of breaking clips, is there a diy post or vid?

Got my headliner back from local upholstery shop. Paid $250 for labor and materials but overall happy with the result. It’s pretty spot on in terms of matching original color and texture.

$250 for labor and materials is a pretty sweet deal!

And I thought I was getting a bargain at $800

Owned my car since new, been garaged its entire life and I got the sagging head liner.

I bought alcantara fabric and plan to recover it myself. I just keep putting it off because i think I need to remove my harness/roll bar to do it and that is a PIA. Winter project me thinks....

Ugh that sucks… I don’t recall how much clearance I needed to slip it out but I think your right main hoop will likely get in way. I guess I’m hindsight I’m “glad” this happened when it did since I’m planning on installing the Weichers kit by fall.

I recall seeing a YouTube link but it’s really unnecessary. Like others said, do on warm day. Slowly pull at the edge and look for where the top clip is located. Squeeze your trim removal tool over the clip and use leverage to remove the clip directly. Repeat for bottom clip and B pillars. Super easy.

Then undo the visors and dome light. Pull back weather strip on both sides and rear and headliner should just drop. Honestly the hardest part is figuring out how to remove it from the car without bending it. Combo of seat adjustments, positioning steering wheel in/low does the trick. Once you get the back corner to clear the B pillar it should come out on an angle.

Folks, anyone did this in the Bay Area recently? Any recommendation for a good upholstery shop (preferably on East Bay )?

Does it make a mess when removing the old headliner? Just trying to figure out if I should cover my seats, etc with plastic or a sheet.

Not really, you might want to cover the seats in thin painters plastic sheet.
Taking the steering off makes it a lot easier to get it out of the car once it is down.
