Any coupe owners get their headliner done?

One of the reasons i wish i got the ///M was because of the black headliner. I'm tired of the grey. I was wondering if anyone had theirs done? If so, what material did you use? I'm thinking alcantara would look nice and be durable enough.

My big worry is having someone tear my interior apart. Is it easy to remove the pillar trim and headliner myself?

pillar trim should be easy - it normally pops off and is attached with slide clips of some sort. I'd check out the guys that replaced their roofs with a CF one because I'd imagine the procedure is nearly identical to a certain extent.

Plenty of people on other forums and cars replace their headliners with suede. In terms of a wanting an M for the headliner... well that's a debatable reason why! LOL

Good luck. I would def use a professional for the wrapping portion of the project. Glue stains etc never look good when an amateur does it.

That would look sick!!! With my research i've seen some diy's on e36's, and it looks pretty straight forward. I'm still too scared that i'll break my trim pieces while trying to pull them off. That could turn into an expensive mistake, or are the clips and trim seperate so i could just replace the clips if i accidentally break a few?

Also, make sure you find real alcantara and not 2nd tier ultrasuede. You can get lucky on ebay, but to guarantee you'll get the right stuff you'll want to go to gulffabrics.com. And if you're going to diy, use 3M hi-strength 90 spray adhesive.

Any decent auto trim shop will be able to remove/dye your pillars and recover your oem headliner.

The pillars just slide up, and are attached by little plastic connectors. Accidentally broke one the other day, need to replace it

Decade bump. I left my car with a new speed shop who after completing the work, left the car outside for 1-2 days. With the scorching heat we’ve had recently, it apparently melted the glue and my headliner is now sagging, sigh.

I’ve seen write ups on how to remove the headliner but my question is there anyway to salvages (repair) the liner? Or is replacement cloth most likely required? Also does anyone know how much a good upholstery shop charge for something like this? I much prefer mechanical work than fiddling with interior pieces and clips - knowing me I just don’t have the patience.

It's not repairable as far as what I've been told. The fabric is glued to a thin foam and most of the time it's the foam that is crumbling away.

Not sure if you had seen this post => https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=30270846

I just had my headliner, A/B pillars done in Alcantara. The cost can vary drastically depending on the shop...so you'll have to shop around. The first shop that I got quoted was around $2k. Then someone from one of the M3 forum recommended a nearby shop that did a wonderful job for about $800! They told me that doing it in the original fabric would cost similar, so I went with the Alcantara upgrade.

Did you leave the car with the shop or remove the headliner and drop it off with them?

I left the car with them and picked it up the next day. The shop owner told me that I was the 4th or 5th coupe that they did and in fact just finished an Interlagos coupe a couple of weeks prior to doing mine.

Thanks, very helpful. Wondering if I should buy a used headliner for less (with the risk it may too come apart some the road) or pay up and retrim my existing one.

I had thought about that as well, but ultimately I just told myself just do it once and be done instead of messing around with a used one that ultimately will end up suffering the same fate since this was the time frame that the German automakers were switching to the water-base adhesive. Both of the upholstery shops that I visited said they are doing a lot of headliners from this genre, especially Caymans.
