VANOS Procedure question
Hello
During my removal of VANOs, following BESIAN systems procedure to the teeth. I noted an issue I had TDC lined up at the crank The timing holes on the cam are pointed up (I did note my exhaust cam is quite a bit off) so I rotated the cam to point up Took the VANOS off, and noted the spline gear on the exhaust side is fully inside the exhaust hub, instead of all the way out per the BESIAN procedure Does it matter where it is on removal? as I have to replace the exhaust hub and chain guide anyways which means I have to remove the exhaust spline.

When I was doing it 3 years back the spline gear on the exhaust side was half way in. Didn't have any issue after reassembling.
PS: was going to suggest to call Raj but just realized that he passed away lately RIP... |

Here it is, I was looking for this thread it just took me a while.
It's just as through as the Beisan procedure but from a different POV. https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/m...os-info-thread

They have been super helpful with the work so far, and felt like they are supporting the product they sell.
I got the unit back together now, and had the VANOS pushed up into the motor now, going to proceed with tightening the hub bolts and hope I got it all perfect. Anxiety is going to make me take it apart just to check the spline gears again, after checking it 3 times already...

If you have INPA, maybe just check the VANOS adaptation degrees before you pull everything back apart again.

Updating the thread, as my procedure went awry.
How does people re-install the VANOs unit back in the car with the spline gears installed? It’s per besians instructions, and countless YouTube sources, I cannot find an alternative method that may work for the limited space in the Z4M Problem is, the VANOS with spline gears installed won’t fit

Check out post #10. It helped me a lot when I was doing this. Also, I would highly suggest using INPA to check your vanos adaptation degrees after you button everything back up and drive it for a bit. |

You need to remove the beauty radiator cover, remove the fan assembly and make the hood release aside (take out the retainer clip)
These gives access from the back of the bulkhead infront of the engine and the whole unit comes out just. Make sure you protect with towels to avoid anything dropping down the engine Removal of the fan takes 5-10 mins |

Its re-assembly that was a problem. The post above does outline the variation required for the Z4M so here's to crossing fingers.

I am sadly back again, I have booked time at a shop, preparing myself for the ‘ticket-to-rape-your-wallet-dry-while-post-up-your-mug-for-the-dumbass-who-thought-they-can-but-shouldnt-work-on-anything-wall’ bill
Feels so defeated, three times later it’s still wrong Took it apart the third time, really paid attention to the position of the spline gear, ensuring it is one tooth next to the position with the least possible rotation, paying attention to have the spline gear sitting just at the entry point of the exhaust hub when I tighten the vanos back on per Besian Then really taking the time to time the motor, I have the OEM tool, The first start was tougher than usual Car was having hiccups, but eventually ran smooth once it is warm P0017 came back, now accompanied by P1424, how did my MAF get affected I’ll never understand And also 2F80, 2D06, besides 2AA5 from before also returned This odd combo of codes is just overwhelming now.

Sorry to hear you are having such trouble! If you decide to take another crack at it, maybe give this thread a quick read:
https://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461862 Camshaft position sensor codes can get thrown when the vanos adaptation is out of spec. Wonder what INPA would show yours to be? No idea why you are getting the MAF code. |

Last time I did the vanos on a mates M3, it was doing the exact same thing. I took it apart 4 or 5 times before I finally caught into what was going on.. (could probably do it in my sleep now) my mates m3 had a head gasket let go, so there was water in the oil.. I thought I had gotten it all, turns out there was some left... Finally vacated all the water contaminated oil and then it worked like a charm, maybe some food for thought if you've done a head gasket.

I just did my vanos and had no issue. Did you figure this out?
Fatboys Garage youtube has a good video on getting the sweet spot on the splined vanos gears. Followed it and car fired up without any engine codes. |

No, haven't had any time, kid's birthday, trying to start a small business, all of it is robbing me of any time i do have.
Talked to Rocco and he gave me some pointers, going to take it apart and see if he is right.
