Evolve airbox - 2F65 brake booster fault
I recently installed Evolve's airbox and had Randy at Epic Motorsports update my tune to Alpha-N. I have been throwing codes 2FDA (crankcase vent) and more recently 2F65 (brake booster system check) since the install. I am working with Randy to try to resolve, but I wanted to solicit input from the forum. The little I could dig up on the 2F65 brake booster fault was reports from people running superchargers, who were having the car enter limp mode.
Was this issue ever diagnosed and resolved? I have not had the car enter limp mode yet, but would prefer to avoid it (especially on the track) if possible |

mines always had a plausibility code for the brake booster in the system but its never caused an actual CEL, i was just guessing boost was causing the circuit to go funny... braking is perfect under ALL circumstances and I've never had a limp mode. The mode you talk of wasn't caused by this BTw.

I had 2FDA code initially. The problem was the vent tubes was not routed properly.
I have SES too. The code it is throwing is all zeros. I sent Evolve an email and waiting for reply. |

Beedub - thanks for your input, that is reassuring
I was fairly certain that the SES was tied to the 2FDA code, but if you are getting the light without 2FDA present that is interesting. I rebuilt the vent tube with silicone tubing and hose clamps, as I was worried the half CSL/half original tube I put together was leaking and/or putting stress on the fittings/bungs to the point that they were leaking at the o-ring seal. I also shaved down a larger o-ring to try to seal on the airbox side, as Evolve's bung seems to be slightly larger in ID than the stock airbox. I am guessing that the vacuum parameters are just not matching up to what the ECU wants due to the major reduction in flow resistance |

Randy @ Epic sent me a new tune to code out the fault/SES associated with the crankcase vent. I have checked all the vacuum fittings to the airbox to ensure a proper seal, and have had no issues with brake boost or pedal feel thus far.
I'm not worried about the crankcase vent, that code is just an annoyance that should be resolved now. The brake booster fault is something I plan to monitor more closely. I'm not sure if faults related to the vacuum boost system can put the car into limp mode, but at this point in the event of the unknown, I prefer to find a stiffer pedal than have the car enter limp mode unexpectedly (especially at the track) I am still curious to see what Evolve comes back with in response. |

I have two fault codes below reading from Evolve=R.
// 1) 0000 No Fault Code description found ! // 2) 2FDA No Fault Code description found ! I know about 2FFDA, but never seen 0000 which is why I suspect maybe related to Alpha-N tune. The car runs strong but this SES is driving me crazy. Evolve refer me to this link for 2FDA. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=371829 Update: Seem like Evolve is blaming 2FDA for the other fault code. I told them 0000 fault was present without 2FDA. they are not much help. I never expected this from Evolve. I purchased this due to Evolve reputation on customer service. Besides, I have no fault until I flashed my car with Alpha-N tune. Last edited by RobMCoupe; 11-04-2015 at 07:35 AM.. |

its clearly tune related then according to what you say.... if this has only been present since the tune / airbag then your answer is pretty clear.
i love evolve but i don't think they've ever really got a handle on the z4m tuning which is why in the end i didn't get them to retune my s/c setup, ill stick with the tried and tested, even if it doesn't get the best Power output.

I drove my car to work which is 80 miles round trip with original tune without SES. I flashed it the next day and it start throwing SES. I even reflash it to make sure it wasn't a flashing error.
I checked my connections and tighten the two clamps for the short rubber hose. Cleared the code and drove about 60 miles and SES light came back. Going to pull the code again today. |

Sounds exactly the same as what my car was doing. Randy @ Epic removed the SES associated with the 2FDA code, and the light has not come back since.

My car is still throwing both 2FDA and 2F65 codes, but the SES light has been coded out. I had the car out at the track this weekend and had no issues with brake vacuum boost

thats good news, what did Randy say was most likely the cause?
Ill probably be in the same boat when my bonnet struts arrive next week.. though my airbox is not the Evolve one, and may come with its own /other/ issues. can i ask you how you wired up the AT probe to the maf socket? any pics of that? cheers

Randy essentially said that his tune was developed on a race car and those issues were not relevant in that scenario. He had me confirm that there weren't any obvious vacuum leaks in the system and I was not having any issues with the brake booster before tuning out the SES. My guess was that the vacuum parameters for the crankcase vent and brake booster are simply out of the spec range that the ECU looks for with the stock airbox. Considering the huge difference in cross sectional flow area between the carbon airbox filter vs. the stock plastic elbow oval connection, I wouldn't expect the manifold pressure to behave the same way.
I ended up just cutting the MAF connector and soldering in the new IAT sensor wiring (2 wires). If you are concerned about it being reversible, the best solution I found on the M3 forums was to cut the connector, and then wire up 5-pin waterproof connectors on both sides. That way, you can have the MAF sensor with the same male (or female) 5-pin connector as the IAT sensor, and they can be interchangeable in the event that you revert back to the stock intake manifold. http://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Ele.../dp/B00C4Q0DBO |

I believe he's saying clip the five MAF wires and use the 5-pin connector to reconnect them. Then use another 5-pin connector for the IAT but only wire in the #1 & #3 wires that are necessary. It'll look really clean and should function perfectly.

Finally got around to redoing wiring using the suggested 5-pin connector. Everything looks great and it also appears to have fixed my 0000, 2FDA & 2F65 problem which I wasn't expecting. I'll wait a couple more drive cycles to declare victory but the SES has come on pretty quickly the last few times.

wait, re-doing the temp sensor got rid of your vacuum codes?? how the hell is that possible?

I don't know. It was a pleasant surprise. I had cleared all the codes the last time I drove the car a couple weeks ago but they didn't come back on during a ~30 mile drive with a mix of freeway, in town and PCH. As I said, I haven't declared victory yet but the SES came on within a couple miles the last few times I had cleared it.
I also messed with the breather hoses to make sure there wasn't anything wrong. There didn't appear to be and I didn't change anything but maybe one just wasn't completely clipped in before or something.
