Looked at both the Boxster S and the 3.0si. Drove the Boxster and it was great to drive, but the IMS issues were not resolved until 09. In the end, I could not stand the thought/concern of driving a car with a known fatal engine issue - no matter how rare it is (and no one knows). Love the Si as well, so I bought it and it has been a great car for the past 3 years. I honestly don't know what I would replace it with when I get rid of it. Maybe another low mileage Z4?

Porsche would be even more expensive to maintain, remember if anything goes wrong with the engine they basically have to get the whole thing out of the car.

2008 si sounds good but I still would get an M

2007 since it will be a little cheaper than the 2008. There weren't any changes between those two years.

Premium and cold weather package so you get bluetooth, upgraded sound and heated seats.

Nav is up to you, but I hate the way it looks and works.

I love my Si, it's been VERY easy and cheap to maintain.

I would personally forget the boxster all together and go with an SI.
I own a 2002 911 C2, and I can tell you that maintenance costs are FAR higher versus BMW. As stated by someone in this thread, if there is any mechanical engine failure, head gasket .etc they pretty much have to drop the engine out of the car to get at it. Not even changing the spark plugs on a Porsche is simple ordeal. Unless you are made of money, go with the SI. Even M maintenance isn't that bad.

M maintenance is really just the valve clearance check, right? The rest of the "maintenance" is pretty similar to other cars, maybe slightly more expensive. Of course, if you're talking part failure and replacement, I don't know much about cost of those things.

M maintenance is not terrible. The oil changes are more expensive because the oil is more expensive. The valve adjustment thing - going 30k miles between them isn't terrible on the S54. If you can't do it yourself, just wait until the valve cover starts leaking and have the mechanic do it then.

Seriously, though, the driving experience is different. Do not read that as "better." The 3.0 will have softer suspension and, if you require, the option of an automatic transmission. The M...not so much. I prefer the M, obviously, but I also recognize that not everyone likes to row their own gears and rattle fillings on rough pavement like I do. Some folks like to cruise around in quiet comfort with some power on tap and eye-catching looks. The 3.0 will get you that.

As was said, no changes between 07 and 08, so go for a low mile 07 and see if you can score a deal. Your issue is that the prices will be higher now than they will in, say, three months.

Try and get one with some warranty left if the reliability scares you.

boondocksaint sounds good to me, i am looking for 2007 3.0SI with paddle shifters, extended leather seats, with leather trim doors, sport mode. i dont care about onboard GPS. anything else i should also look for ?
i just checked price difference between 07 and 08 is not much. i might then go for 08. i might buy it in january or feb when prices go down bit.

Extended leather keeps the rattles and squeaks to a minimum, but I dunno how many people sprung the extra grand plus for it.

If you have not driven both, drive an M and a 3.0 before you pull the trigger. You may find your mind changing.

I woudn't go near a pre-2009 (DFI) Boxster. IMS, oil starvation--who needs that nightmare? I got rid of my Cayman due to high rate of failure for those issues. Maintenance costs are much higher.

+1

3.0 with the sport suspension gets pretty close I think to "M filling rattling level" I think, but I'm not a 3.0 expert. Either way, 3.0 or M I don't think you can go wrong. Things like rotors and the valve adjustment cost more on the M, but not that much more and we're talking 30K or so intervals.

I did search between 2007 3.0SI and 2008 3.0Si modela; the pricing difference comes down to number of miles, so i might go with 2008 3.0SI with extended leather because I HATE PLASTIC RATTLES
