I am using Star Spec now ; it has higher grip than Hankook.
It has only been 3 months so I can't say whether it has the same long term degradation issue like Hankook.

I just read a good review on the sumitomo htr z iii, anyone have any experience? I'm just about 5/32 on front and rear inner and looking for 235f/265r on stock wheels.

Just realized I never updated with any pictures. I apologize for the quality (Iphone) but these should give you an idea.

Not a bad tire at all for the money. I had a blowout with the stock Contis, and all the tire store had in stock were the Sumis. I bought them with the intention of replacing them with something better if they sucked, and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't have experience with the PS2 on the M, but I can say that the Sumis are a huge improvement over the worn-out stock tires. If buying tires was a one-time thing, I'd buy PS2s. But with having to replace them every 15-20k miles, I'm going for the Sumis. I haven't tracked them.

Thank Finnegan! I thought the lower profile might make the wheel gap look too big but those look pretty good.

No, rear, 265.

I found the charger for the good (Nikon) camera, so if you guys want more decent shots I can take those in a day or two.

I just discovered a "new" tire I may try next time on the ///M: Vredestein Ultrac-Sessantas. The come in a 235/40/18 and a 265/35/18. These are half the cost of PS2s, have more tread life, and are better wet or dry--or so that's the consensus by quite a few E9x M3 drivers.

I'll need new tires on the M3 pretty soon, so I'm going to give them a whirl. I'll see if they're candidates to contend with the Star Specs (doubt it, but we'll see, and can't get Star Specs in 19s for the M3). But they sound like good contenders for replacing the PS2s at a great cost. Guys claim they work great on the track, and they've got a wild look too. This is a well known European tire brand, just a bit hard to find here.

Good thread over on M3 post about this tire and results. Worth a read.

Finnegan, I have the Vredestein's on OEM sizes on my MC and so far i'm liking them. I've put down a couple of thousand miles so far with them on. They've got softer sidewalls than the stock Continentals so they're not as sharp feeling but they have noticeably more grip after the first few hundred miles. Havent had a chance to try them in the rain yet though but i'm sure they'll do fine.

I was considering the 235/265 route for the mcoupe, but thought the diameter would make the speedometer even more inaccurate. Anyone else running this size on their mcoupe without issues?

The best indicator is probably the wear ratings on the sidewall. The Star Specs on my E36 have a little over 5k miles on them, including about 10 track days - they should have enough left for four more trackdays at Laguna Seca this weekend and if there is any tread left after that we should cord them at El Toro at the end of the month. Overall that's quite good service from them and is probably equivalent to 20k+ miles of general road driving.

The Star Specs that I use for tracking on my M coupe have not worn as well, but they have some time at El Toro on them, which is a particularly abrasive surface. For general street use it wears the Hankook V12s which so far seem to be working quite well for that, though they don't have the grip on track that the Star Specs have.
Appreciate the info, I'm at 5/32 on the contis, can't seem to get them to hit the wear bars, but it is taking me a long time to research new tires. I've heard the Ventus are great and they are on my list as well, I'm now considering upsizing on stock wheels, 275 in the rear seems like the tires will be mushy, 10" seems more appropriate for 275s.

I'm running the 245/275 combination on 9s and 10s with the V12s and I don't notice anything adverse with that setup. I have 235/265 Star Specs on the stock wheels and there is a bit more speedo error with that, maybe 2 mph difference, but thats mostly a track setup so I'm not too concerned about it. I'm impressed with how well they are wearing on my E36 - they saw another 3 track days of service this past weekend along with around another 1k of highway/town driving and they still have a fair bit of service left in them.

Yes, the speedo is more "off". But it was never accurate to begin with. 2-3 MPH over the real speed (typical of BMWs). Now it's off by more. We just subtract about 5 MPH from the speedo and call it a day. Or, you can view it as a "ticket reducer" and believe the speedo--with a red Z4M it doesn't hurt to keep speed down on the freeways around here anyway and leave the "fun" for little travelled back roads or the track.

Thanks. I'm going to give them a shot on the M3 and see what I think. The stock PS2s have a softer sidewall to begin with, and the Vred's may actually be a bit stiffer than those. We'll see. Won't get them for couple months as I'm working on getting all I can from the PS2s within the bounds of safety.

Completely agree, I'll add that size to my list of possibles now, thanks man.

Plenty of people on http://www.Z4-forum.com and http://Pistonheads.com have them on Z4M's and speak well of them, some also track with the Vreds so they shouldnt be too bad. Almost half the price of the stock Contis too so i'm definitely not complaining.

I was going to go with the RE-11 since it is my fav tire next to the RE-01R (wish I could get them but no longer in production) but according to the Tirerack test data the AD-08 turned a faster lap time then the RE-11 and the Star Spec. I am going to try them next weeked for a couple sessions at the track before I put on my R888s to see how they perform

To the OP... I don't think you can go wrong with either the Star Spec, RE-11 or AD-08. The tirerack said there was only tenths of a second between these tires in terms of lap times. If it was me I would go with 245/40/18 and 265/35/18.... it is one of my favorite tire sizes I have run. My current 18' set up is 255/35/18 and 275/35/18. The 245/40/18 will rub a tiny tiny bit if your car is lowered but the 255/35/18 doesn't rub at all no matter how low I put the front of my car and I am running a 15mm spacer with the OEM front wheels. This is with -2.4 camber in the front

Just curious Finnegan, how'd you score that price? I paid over $100 more... unless the prices have really gone up that much since your post in October.

The original set on my wife's car were purchased April 2, 2010, for 859.00 including shipping with a 50 dollar rebate, so net of 809.00. (Post was October, but purchase was earlier last year).

My set, purchased June 1, 2011, were 924.00, but with a 80 dollar rebate, so net after rebate is 844.00. With the larger rebate the price is marginally higher. BTW, both cars use the same size (235/40ZR -18 front and 265/35ZR -18).

If you purchased between May and July you can claim the 80 dollar rebate--Tire Rack should have sent you a rebate form.

Yeah, there's one coming, which will make the net price about $890-900. Looks like the prices on these are just going up.

Damn--these things are getting pricey! I think they're pricing themselves out of the market (well, at least with me at this rate, and I know Shipkiller decided on the NT05s given the price differential).

If I keep doing track days at my current rate (2-3/month) I'm going to need new tires in the early to mid fall. I'm going to find it hard to pay 1K (or nearly 1K) for tires when the NT05s and other options are about 300 less for similar capability/performance.

Agreed. I actually regretted buying them on Saturday when I found out I could've saved $250 going with Hankook V12's on DiscountTiresDirect instead. They're already shipped now though, so I figure I'll just stick with the Dunlops.
