I am using Star Spec now ; it has higher grip than Hankook.
It has only been 3 months so I can't say whether it has the same long term degradation issue like Hankook. |

I just read a good review on the sumitomo htr z iii, anyone have any experience? I'm just about 5/32 on front and rear inner and looking for 235f/265r on stock wheels.

Just realized I never updated with any pictures. I apologize for the quality (Iphone) but these should give you an idea.

Not a bad tire at all for the money. I had a blowout with the stock Contis, and all the tire store had in stock were the Sumis. I bought them with the intention of replacing them with something better if they sucked, and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't have experience with the PS2 on the M, but I can say that the Sumis are a huge improvement over the worn-out stock tires. If buying tires was a one-time thing, I'd buy PS2s. But with having to replace them every 15-20k miles, I'm going for the Sumis. I haven't tracked them.

I found the charger for the good (Nikon) camera, so if you guys want more decent shots I can take those in a day or two. I just discovered a "new" tire I may try next time on the ///M: Vredestein Ultrac-Sessantas. The come in a 235/40/18 and a 265/35/18. These are half the cost of PS2s, have more tread life, and are better wet or dry--or so that's the consensus by quite a few E9x M3 drivers. I'll need new tires on the M3 pretty soon, so I'm going to give them a whirl. I'll see if they're candidates to contend with the Star Specs (doubt it, but we'll see, and can't get Star Specs in 19s for the M3). But they sound like good contenders for replacing the PS2s at a great cost. Guys claim they work great on the track, and they've got a wild look too. This is a well known European tire brand, just a bit hard to find here. Good thread over on M3 post about this tire and results. Worth a read. Last edited by Finnegan; 07-14-2010 at 01:42 AM.. |

Finnegan, I have the Vredestein's on OEM sizes on my MC and so far i'm liking them. I've put down a couple of thousand miles so far with them on. They've got softer sidewalls than the stock Continentals so they're not as sharp feeling but they have noticeably more grip after the first few hundred miles. Havent had a chance to try them in the rain yet though but i'm sure they'll do fine.

Yes, the speedo is more "off". But it was never accurate to begin with. 2-3 MPH over the real speed (typical of BMWs). Now it's off by more. We just subtract about 5 MPH from the speedo and call it a day. Or, you can view it as a "ticket reducer" and believe the speedo--with a red Z4M it doesn't hurt to keep speed down on the freeways around here anyway and leave the "fun" for little travelled back roads or the track.

To the OP... I don't think you can go wrong with either the Star Spec, RE-11 or AD-08. The tirerack said there was only tenths of a second between these tires in terms of lap times. If it was me I would go with 245/40/18 and 265/35/18.... it is one of my favorite tire sizes I have run. My current 18' set up is 255/35/18 and 275/35/18. The 245/40/18 will rub a tiny tiny bit if your car is lowered but the 255/35/18 doesn't rub at all no matter how low I put the front of my car and I am running a 15mm spacer with the OEM front wheels. This is with -2.4 camber in the front

Just curious Finnegan, how'd you score that price? I paid over $100 more... unless the prices have really gone up that much since your post in October.

My set, purchased June 1, 2011, were 924.00, but with a 80 dollar rebate, so net after rebate is 844.00. With the larger rebate the price is marginally higher. BTW, both cars use the same size (235/40ZR -18 front and 265/35ZR -18). If you purchased between May and July you can claim the 80 dollar rebate--Tire Rack should have sent you a rebate form. |

If I keep doing track days at my current rate (2-3/month) I'm going to need new tires in the early to mid fall. I'm going to find it hard to pay 1K (or nearly 1K) for tires when the NT05s and other options are about 300 less for similar capability/performance. |
