Ticking etc

Hi all,

So, I did my requisite searching (I don't like to post if I haven't at least looked) and I can't seem to find any video/audio of injector ticking.

I was driving with a friend last night, and he brought the noise to my attention. Pretty much a constant ticking throughout the rev range that speeds up as revs increase. To him (ex-mechanic) it sounded like low oil. However the oil level is good.

I've searched through all the threads regarding Vanos ticking, Tappet ticking, Valve ticking, etc. However I can't find any audio/video of regular old injector ticking.

Any help would be appreciated, as I'd like to have a general idea of what the noise is before I bring it in for a service. Thanks!

Are you close to needing inspection 1 or 2? The engine ticks if u need a valve adjustment.

I'm at 72k miles, so I and II were done. I'm likely coming due for another one though.

Since the car is new to me, I don't know what 'normal' sounds like, which is pretty much why I'm asking. No codes, no power loss, everything seems fine, I'm just hearing a noise I'm not used to...

I'm bringing it in for service on Tuesday regardless, as after reading all the threads here I'm going to have the Vanos looked at / replaced as a preventative measure. I just don't want to walk in blind telling them I need a valve adjustment if it's just the injectors.

To me our engine always has a small tick if you listen for it. Valve adjustments only minimize it.

After watching this clip, I'm pretty sure it's just that ticking you hear in the beginning (that slowly gets drowned out as it revs higher). So if this clip is the 'normal' sound I think I'm good...

Can you post a video/audio?

The S54 has a naturally noisey valve train. It's possible the exhaust hub bolts are loose, but, impossible to guess normal vs. issue w/o sound.

There are quite a few videos a Google search can find so you can hear normal vs. issue. Here's one of an issue.

Here's a video. Forgive the actual visual, I was trying to move the phone around to find the best spot to capture the noise. It's just at idle, but you can clearly hear the 'newsroom' type sound I'm talking about in the beginning.

From what you have shown, your car is normal for an s54.

Sounds pretty good.
When I first brought my car home the Wife was waiting on the driveway.
First thing she said was "is it supposed to sound like that?".
It grows on you.

I don't think a 2007 will have camshaft bolt problems, but you'll want to keep an eye on the exhaust hub tabs.

Vanos rattle/tick. Plan for a vanos rebuild with a Beisian kit in the future. Covered pretty in depth over at M3forums
