Fuel Pump / Tank Lock Ring and Gasket

So I replaced the fuel pump and filter over the winter with new OEM. All went very well, smeared some petroleum jelly on the gasket to prevent knicking the gasket and the ring went on slick as shitake.

Fast forward to today and filling the tank from a Jerry can in the garage and gas all over the floor.
Will need to remove the exhaust and shrouds again to investigate.
Any words of wisdom?
Gasket was new with the pump!!!

Edit, when I originally changed out the filter and pump I could not get the rubber seal to seat in the recess of the filter so I set it as good as I could and it fekt like all was good when I spun on the lock ring.
When I took it apart today the seal did fit the recess. No idea why it did not fit the first time.
All buttoned up and running like a champ

The filter assembly fits one way; did you make sure that the protrusion fits in the indentation?
The ring has to be turned until the mark on the ring sits between to guidemarks on the tank. Did you do that? (officially it has to be done with a torque wrench and special adapter)

But you probably just have to look where the gas is coming from. It could be the hose too of course

Thanks Guido, yes I followed every step to a tee fearing what is now happening.
I will go through all steps again.
The gasket/ rubber ring did not seem to fit as perfect as I thought it would on assembly, so maybe it shifted during assembly.
