Z4M age/tech issues?
Gents, i'm curious as to how you think the Z4M compares to newer M cars? I went from a 2011 M3 to the Z4M and while I miss the S65 V8 I find the Z4M a hoot to drive. Even though the newer and coming M cars are all turbos now whith their 7 year lead finally overtake our "older" M's. Also consider a Z4M upgraded with bigger brakes, supercharged and suspension tweaks as a contender. I'm slowly doing those things to my Z4M. I'm really curious as to how it will stack up to the future M2 and HOPEFULLY a future Z4/Z5 with a true hardtop version.

Compared to the newer models, with turbos, they're not for me, neither is the grotesque amount of carbon buildup being experienced by buyers of them. Natural aspiration is still the way to go.
But I rant Enjoy the E86M, it's truly a remarkable car.

Pretty great - always will be something faster
The M at the time (06-07 were the fastest cars sold by BMW and they didn't sell many - of course the super HP models didn't really start till the last couple of years and in spite of all that power - they don't look anywhere near as good. For a combination of looks and go - tough to beat them -- like a JAG XKE - 63-64 V12 - beautiful and very fast at the time and still beautiful though more are faster.

Like everything else, the direction you choose will be a trade-off. There are good ways to build a solid (and quick) NA car and FI does offer the biggest bang for the buck. The bottom end bearings are more likely to wear quicker with FI, but they will also wear under NA if one is continually spinning 7K+ rpm. Have a good look at your state's smog compliance laws before leaping. Here in CA we do not have much choice, although there are reports of FI people who have been successful.

I like the simplicity of our cars. Nothing (too) fancy, easy to work on, easy to operate. One of the biggest things I'm going to miss about this car is all the room under the hood.

Totally agree with this. Currently in the market for a mini for the gf. I was looking around the engine compartment at a dealership; there's maybe 20% of the volume of our engine compartment in those cars, and every inch of it is packed full.

Love the simple lines, and just love that look and sound. Every time I walk away from it, I take a second or 3rd look. The connection to the road is there, in the new cars, not so much so.

I agree, I find myself doing the same thing. I do miss the S65 V8. If I was made of money i'd swap one in. What a combo that would be! Anybody know the cost of a S65 or a used one?
