I'll be going on a cross country trip with my M roadster next week (can't wait ), but my time lines are kinda tight as far as where I plan to be and for how long.
I don't really have time to spend half a day at a dealership while they do all the inspections and oil changes. Can I get it done before I leave - with 2500 miles before the inspection is really due?

Thanks fellas.

I have not had any luck getting any type of inspection done with more than 1500 showing on the "inspection clock" that shows when you start the vehicle. I am going to guess no, but it never hurts to ask.

Just drive it until you get back. If you are over by a bit I am sure it won't matter. Just make sure your oil is topped off before you leave.

Is this really a linear measurement of how many miles before the inspection is due? I thought it varied according to how the car was driven. In other words, if you are making a bunch of short trips the time to inspection miles click off at a certain rate. If you are making a lot of easy highway miles they click off at a different rate.

I noticed mine said 1,750 a while ago until I was due for an inspection. I made a couple of longer mostly highway trips and the distance to inspection did not drop mile for mile. Actually I have driven almost 2,000 real miles and the miles to inspection now reads 700.

Is that the way it is suppose to work?

Inspection 1 is supposed to occur at 15k miles, but my inspection clock says I'm due in 100 miles and im a little over 13k miles. I do drive it pretty hard tho so I'm thinking that it's not purely linear.

The service indicator operates on the basis of fuel consumed, so it will indicate longer service intervals if your driving is mostly highway, as opposed to one who drives mostly heavy city traffic (or adds a few track days). Strangely, it seems that the same factors are used whether the car is an M or an i/si model.

I had my inspection II done half way through a cross country trip - didnt interfere at all. Just booked in the day before at the city i was heading to (san antonio TX), dropped car in morning and courtesy shuttle took me to wherever i wanted to go and picked me up from wherever i was when it was done. They even recommended the best restaurant in town because i wasnt from around there and the service manager gave me his home number and invited me over for a bbq turned into a really top day!

I believe that IS correct. Also - won't the dealer go ahead with the service if the TIME interval (e.g. one year) has elapsed even if the full mileage hasn't?

They did in my case. I took the car in for annual service as it only has 10K miles and is 3 yrs old. They did an oil change and brake fluid flush as a time required service. Did not reset the service mileage indicator so I will need another oil change in a few months. It reads 725 miles right now.

Yes, the oil services are 15K miles OR 1 year. I think the Service I and Service II (big ones) are just mile dependent though.

I've found that it depends on how you drive the car. A more aggressive driver will have to service the vehicle sooner.
