What oil do you use? How thick is ok?

What oil do you use on your z?

What the thickest you would run on a e85 n52 (2006)?

Valve lifters ticking hoping thicker oil will help shut them up a bit.

Don't have any experience with the n52's but since no one is replying, I'll give it a shot.

The two most popular one's for the n52's are:
- OE BMW Castrol 5w-30
- Mobile 1 0w-40

I see you're in Toronto so because of it being a little colder up there I'd probably do a 50/50 mix between the two.

Regardless, you're experiencing a ticking noise. This seems like a common issue for n52's in cold climate. People have replaced the lifters, but the noise returned later down the line. This is due to the bad head design which lacks in oil supply to the lifters. The only one I found that did solve the issue completely is getting the head replaced. Before taking that step, what I would do is change the oil and filter in shorter intervals. No more than 7,500 would be ideal. If the ticking continues, you might need to consider a new head replacement.

I wish I can provide more information. I'm just not as familiar with these engines. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Suggest searching the forums, this topic has been debated ad nauseam. How the car is driven, temperature range/weather, change intervals, expense... are a few of the considerations.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ is a good general reference site.

My shop used Motul Xcess 8100 5w-40. Do you drive the car in the winter? That would affect what oil you use too.

I'd say 0w-40 or 5w-40 then. Whichever one you can find in stock. OEM, Mobil 1, Castrol Edge or Motul 8100 Xcess are the ones I see BMW guys using. Turner also sells the Motul 6100 Synergie 10w-40 for our car, but I haven't seen anyone on here use it.
