The N52 is silky smooth and has great torque down low -- perfectly adequate as a daily commuter. The M's engine is, a word, brash. It makes you want to flaunt the law at every straight.

Got a call from the dealer yesterday and the head that BMW sent does not fit the variable valve setup. They have called BMW NA and they should have an answer on Mon morning. At least I have a 5 series for a loaner and will get a 1 series convert. On Monday morning.

The old girl is finally back! She's running great and the butt dyno says she has more power. We'll see how she does as time goes by.

How is it that BMW has not released a service bullitin which offers to have this problem taken care of for free?

There may not be a service bulletin, but I haven't paid one cent for all the work. They probably don't want to acknowledge it with a bulletin, but they will definitely fix it for you.

My car is out of warranty, so I would imagine this work would be out of pocket no?

I just picked my car up for what will likely be my LAST warranty service .

I'm at 47K miles.

I'd complained about valvetrain racket once before and it was noted.

This time....They replaced all head componets, cams, lifters etc. Including all seals, bearings etc. at no charge.

They said they found scoring on the cams.

I even managed a new BMW/Exide battery...about 2" bigger. My OEM one had been down a few times and had to be jumped....they said after testing it was defective....

They also did my differential seals at 3 points.

Also front bushings,wiper blades,cabin filter,washer fluid and oil/filter.

They wouldn't do my brakes/rotors.....I was still at 5mm and 9mm. They require less at I believe its 3mm before they will do that.

I'll report back here again after some break-in time to see what the lifters sound like with some cycle time.

Cheers,Vinny

I read this long story and must decide whether to extend my warranty with BMW. My 2007 Z4 3.0 coupe has less then 10K. Once last year I heard the valve train rattle but nothing since then.

I mainly noticed the racket when pulling in or out of the garage with window down.....not as noticeable when out doors.

And.....not always audible at all. But the fact that it ran great but STILL scored the cam lobes says a lot !

OH ! I almost forgot.....they also replaced the whole steering column due to a fault code that occurred ONCE !

I've heard this rattle only a few times during my 63k miles on my 2007 3.0si.

I still say it's a non-issue in most cases, and the dealer replaces components to quiet an unhappy customer. Some instances it may be needed, but certainly not mine.

I would say not yours either - once in 10k miles? Some people have it much more often. Taking a good long drive and running some higher RPMs always seems to solve the problem for me.

If it were me I wouldn't extend it just for this. The extended warranty is a rip-off in the first place if you ask me...but that's another thread.

I had my 06 Si in for the same noise. They first did the rev procedure to get oil in the lifters and kept the car overnight and the noise was back the next morning. # weeks later they called and asked for the car and replaced the lifters ( something about a heavier spring and bigger oil ports), 5 weeks later the noise returned and taking the car back and another wait and they replaced the head. After 5 months the noise has not returned to this point. I pulled the service order to check for part #'s and there was none listed on my invoice, called to see why that was, was told that due to the fact the work was done at their expense, parts #'s are not listed. What a crock of crap. Sorry I can be no help here.

After reading this post I made an appointment to have the intermittent ticking noise looked at Kuni BMW (IMO top notch service center). I live 40 miles from this place and I knew by the time I got there the ticking noise would be gone. Later in the day I got a call from Kuni and they confirmed the ticking noise and are replacing the Lifters. They are keeping the car overnight just to make sure it doesn't show up again in the morning when it is cold. I asked them about the Head replacement and they told me that BMW has them go through certain procedures before they replace the head, but if the noise shows up again their next course of action was to replace the head. Great! Coo! Steps in the right direction with out the run around of going through the bleeding process.
Now the SAD part of this story. As I was waiting second in line for the service center garage door to open at 7:00am the guy first in line decides to put his car in reverse and backs into my front bumper. The impact tore my bumper and broke the mounting tabs off my headlight! I think I woke the dead from all the cursing and screaming I did from inside the car! It took me a good 5 minutes before I could even get out of the car and deal with the assailant. If the guy wasn't so apologetic I would have done a Ninja back flip and John Rambo'ed his ass. So long story short, after the lifter job, its going to the body shop for repairs, and maybe get an M or Aero bumper upgrade depending on the price difference...... I miss my baby........

After six months of arguing with Dreyer and Reinbold BMW in Indianapolis, and BMWNA, I finally am getting my cylinder head replaced. They put in the updated lifters over the winter, and that didn't resolve it, so we've moved on to the real cause of the problem. Hopefully, I will have a quiet and smooth engine from here on out.

Glad to hear it worked out for you, I hope I have the same luck. I know it's been asked before, but did you break in the new parts?

Thanks
