Frank,

Once you exit turn 11 and straighten out, directly in front of you will be an 8 or 12 inch section of the gator at turn 12 has broken away. It is just a section of the corner edge of the gator that is missing. That is your turn point.

I have not been to VIR since my incident so I don’t know if the turn in marker for turn 12 (Oak Tree) is still there with the addition of the FIA curbing.

Thanks, Ship.

I confirmed that the car WILL go nicely around Oak Tree at 39.0 mph, but WILL NOT make it around at 46.2 when you don't brake! At least not with my tires...

I know just where you're talking about. What I was working on was positioning the car with a better--less acute--attitude relative to 12, and getting out to the point you describe while doing so. Got that part better toward the end of the weekend, now I just need to drive a shorter line to that point, making it more of a single arc. Randy does that really well, looks to me.

The FIA curbing looks to be all outside the old curbing, and didn't notice any effective changes due to that, unless you're jumping the curbs by about four feet.

Looking forward to your next update on the car--hopefully it's the 'all done" update.

I'll be there in May also. I checked the block that says I don't want an instructor. Does that mean that I can solo the entire time? Still new to this HPDE stuff.

Unless they know you and your driving expertise or your have your SCCA license, I think you are going to have an instructor.

Here is what the sign-up page says:
An instructor will be assigned to Green and Blue Group drivers and there will be daily classroom sessions for these groups. If you are signing up as an Intermediate Solo or Advanced driver, you will be asked for references if you have not run with FSR before.

Thanks for the info. They have no idea who I am and this is going to be my second HPDE. However, with the Tarheel BMWCCA my instructor had me solo'ing with the C group and I can run with the B group next time. I would prefer to just solo the entire time, my last instructor Chris Thompson taught me everything I need to know about the track. I included a link to my solo video under the remarks section and I hope that's enough for them to let me run in the intermediate group. I'll probably get a call or email from them when they review my request..... At which point I will sound like a douch like with Tarheel BMWCCA and tell them my home track is the Nurburgring... LOL

You solo'ed for that event ONLY...

I don't want you to get take this the wrong way, but if this is going to be your 'second HPDE' and you don't have an instructor in the car, I don't want to be on the track at the same time as you.

I can see it from your angle because people in the States don't know how to drive. I don't fit into that category and I guess I'll explain why. I've driven 75 laps on the Nurburgring without an instructor and I usually go around there anywhere from 8:15 to 8:30 BTG depending on traffic with the best time of 8:07 in light traffic. Maturity, I fly a 20 million dollar aircraft (AH-64D Apache Longbow) for the US Army. So, I fully understand your concerns but I am definitely not your typical student at a HPDE. I lapped VIR Full at 2:15 three times during my solo session on street tires, not your Nitto barely legal street tire, Continental Contisportcontact 5p. Not to mention I was coasting and braking early because my right front caliper was showing signs of leakage. My top speed for the session was 140 but the 2:15 laps, I was maxing at 137 on the back straight. So, I think you are coming to this event in May too right? Maybe what I've written will change your mind about being on track with me at the same time. If it doesn't, well, the problem doesn't lie with me.

Enjoy!

Aren't forums great!

No doubt, you, sir, are your M3's best friend! Nice laps, nice lines, nice times around those hallowed grounds. What's the May event?

LOL, thanks! I owe it all to my instructor, Chris Thompson. The event in May is with TrackDaze, think it is 5-6 May.

I'm going to try a new line going around Oak Tree, I was taught the double apex line, I'm going to try the single apex next time.

I have a friend that has personally raced at VIR, has owned multicar teams that have raced there, and currently coaches people out there. He drove the inaugural race when they re-opened it. He's been going out there probably at least monthly for years. All this is simply to say there is no replacement for a great instructor or coach, and one that knows the place from a career of driving there is priceless. All that said, I'm not going to BS anyone - I've talked and learned all I can about it but have not yet driven it. Still nothing compares to the first hand experience of driving at a place. I'm an informed but not experienced critic - weird huh?

Yes, yes, I don't have to even listen all that closely - what I have to do is get organized! And prioritize....but now that's even trickier with a little one on the way.

I'll be there running with TrackDaze as well. Nothing like full course VIR!

Only saw one M Z4 at the TrackDaze event in May. BMW was well represented though, there were a ton of M3s. I went with traction control off this weekend and had a blast. Here's a video of me running with worn PS2s mounted on OEM 18s:

Looked pretty "interesting" on the front part of the circuit on those worn tires!

Since Armyav8tor ressurected this thread, thought I'd mention that the next full course BMW CCA event at VIR is Aug 25-26. I'll start a new thread for that one shortly before registration opens, but in the meantime, who's up for it? Nick, it's about time to escape NY again...

(There's also a North Course BMW CA shool at the end of June, but I won't make that.)

Let's resurrect this thread one more time! August 26, session 4 solo. 3rd time at VIR, 3rd HPDE. 2:13 lap on street tires but I'm not done yet.
