v701 ? how about these?

looking at a set of vmr v701's... while i know these are somewhat heavy, the cost of real advans are a bit beyond my reach (not only up front, but individual replacement cost as well). below are a few pics i've chopped together. thank you dubbedown and 1013MM for donating bits of pics for the following! these are 18's... (obviously the bmw performance brakes would not be a part of this, but 1013MM's car had them equipped)

I was seriously considering them because these wheels break from the CSL-like 8 and 7 spoke designs that have flooded the market. I need new rear tires, and now would be the time to buy. I just can't get over spending a grand on the wheels (after shipping, tax, and mounting and balancing tires) and not getting any performance benefit. Lightweight wheels are available for around $1300. If they weighed 20 lbs or so I'd be all over them.

i'm definitely considering weight. i'm on stock 203's currently... according to http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/ , they weigh in at 11.23kg front and 11.93kg rear...

11.23 kg = 24.71 lbs
11.93 kg = 26.25 lbs

pyspeed claims the v701 is "approx. 24 lbs", so we can assume 25lbs is more accurate. i intend to rid myself of the super heavy runflats during this switch, so overall it should be an upgrade where weight is concerned.

i see the 224m is...

11.20 kg = 24.64 lbs = front
11.70 kg = 25.74 lbs = rear

it would certainly be difficult to justify the v701 vs. the 224m. the advan rs is the next step in that direction (as far as looks), but they're over $600/ea.

that 2nd coupe looks really familiar! =P

i like the 701s, while i'm not a fan of vmr's weight, if i had to do em over again i would've gone with these b/c i too am a fan of the advan rs look.

just be careful of their tire suggestions, vendors try to push e90 fitment and convinced me to get a 235 up front which caused rubbing.

btw, i was in the same position as you but if i learned anything here, you'll always find the wheels you want for the price you want. you just have to wait for them. my volks retail over $800/new but i was able to get them from someone here (brand new) at significant discount. point is, don't get wheels (especially paying retail) if you know you'r ultimately going to upgrade.

Are ADVAN RS the only lightweight alternative for this design?

ha! yeah, i've read enough of your posts to have learned that lesson before ruining any parts. so thanks for that! totally true.

i'm currently toying with a 235/40 8.5" et45, or even 225/45 8.0" et45, up front to combat rubbing and also to stay as close as possible to zero for the scrub radius. the most likely scenario thus far is...

225/45R18 8.5" et45 = front
255/40R18 9.5" et45 = rear

this will give me the stance (track and "arch fullness") i'm looking for, plus a wide variety of tread options.

Closest lightweight design is the OZ Alleggerita but lack the concavity and spoke length of the Advans

HRE has a 11 spoke design which looks good, but is expensive. The OZ wheels have 9 spokes, and they look hollow and not nearly as good IMO.

talk about being picky, nobody said the OZ's were a match lol. its the next best option for the price. for the price of HRE's, you could just get the Advans...

Here it says they are 26 lbs:

http://www.redline-motorworks.com/Ve...m-18-5x120.htm

Honestly I would even go for them if they were only a couple pounds lighter than stock. My stock wheels have 65k miles on them... for the price difference of getting them refinished and powdercoated, I could spring for these for daily driving.

I've seen the 19's listed as being 26 lbs as well, so maybe they are using the 19" numbers.

On Redline they show the 19's as weighing 26 lbs.

I have the VMR V710's, and the quality sucks. 2 of the wheels arrived chipped. It didn't take long before all 4 wheels got various chips on each wheel. I've had 8~9 sets of aftermarket wheels and the VMR has had the worst quality. They're for my winter tires so I don't really care that much. But if they were for my regular/summer set-up, I'd have been seriously pissed. By the way, it's Seattle/Vancouver winter, so basically it's just rain and low tempurature so it's not like there's that much debris in the streets to chip the wheels.

And always, always take VMR/**********'s listed weights with a HUGE grain of salt.

Not the first post I've seen on VMRs reporting poor finish quality and listed weights being off...

The OZ wheels don't look good at all (I've seen them on several cars in person including the Z4M), and yes that one spoke and whatever else makes a difference. I personally wouldn't shell out thousands for HRE wheels in general.

Agreed, from M3forum reading. If they have a powdercoat option, that might help. They could be bought and powdercoated and still end up much less that boutique wheels cost up front - and those probably have a painted finish...

I vote a definite for the style too. Even if they aren't a cold forged, F1-strong wheel, the V701 was a definite consideration for me too with the less common but really nice style.

I also like the XXR 518 they have 22lbs and look very nice but it's very rare to find one with our bolt pattern.
