Exclamation SES light and limp mode

I was out driving tonight and my SES light came on and the engine feels like it went into limp mode - very choppy, like it's only running on 3 cylinders. I kept the revs down and drove it home. Since it's the weekend my dealer can't see me until Monday. Without having a code scanner, does anyone know what typically causes this? My last fillup was about 65 miles ago, 93 octane...I would think if it's the gas I would have noticed it sooner.

I've turned the car off and started it again a few times and the light is either there when the car is started, or returns within about 10 seconds. Is there any easy way to do a reset of the ECU and see if it returns? Anyone else had this happen?

Why would you want to reset the light if your car is obviously not running properly. The light isn't the problem; the light is an indicator that a problem exists.

Sounds like a misfire, take it to the dealer and have them check it for codes. Once the figure out what cylinder is the problem have 'em check the coil packs/spark plugs.

Thanks....that seems to be the most common response I've found searching around for others having this issue. My friend is bringing over his OBD-II scanner tomorrow to check the codes...would a misfire show up on a generic OBD-II scan?

I think this is what torture feels like. Driving the M for 7 days and then having to go a whole weekend without being able to touch it.

Misfire codes should show up on a generic OBD-II scan.

Took it to the dealer this morning and was out in less than 2 hours, including a wash. Turned out to be a bad coil pack on one of the cylinders. Glad this turned up now and not on the 1200 mile roadtrip I'm about to take over Christmas.
