Hot Shifter?

After driving for a few hours in my Z4MC I've noticed that the base of of my shifter is getting warm. Pulling up the shift gaiter, the base of the shift lever is quite hot.

Before I start pulling things apart, is this normal in any way?

Is the heat more likely to be coming from the exhaust or from the transmission? Does the rubber boot need replacing or is there any other insulation?

Thanks,
Luke
