Will do - ground off the other one so may as well take the whole thing off - I can just imagine what gets through - the filter AND the hosing - they have inserts to measure the leakage and I am sure it is dust that gets in around the fittings - I even considered putting some vaseline or hairspray on the tubing to seal it up a little more,
I asked Roman at ESS about the catch can and he said not needed with the current recirculating piping and the stage 1. I had one on my Corvette which was not FI and it would get more shit in it. Which catch can did you get and many have mounted them in the back left area of the engine compartment 0 you? Yours is coming out of storage 0 we got 30cm if snow today 0 mines in bed till mid - late APril

heres my setup.. (note s/c compressor housing strap used for mounting brace ;-))
i went with the DD 42 design ulitamte catch can, its a work of art, google it ;-) i went with the crackle black finish and also got rid of the ess oil lines and replaced them with kevlar re-inforced braided lines... BTW it was stage 1 that made me realise how much a CC was needed... if in doubt, wait till youve done a few k miles and take off the plastic s/c inlet..... you'll be shocked at what you see. dont worry too much about the filter hosing now, small particles of dust will get in, its the solid bigger stuff were worried about :-) i take the s/c inlet off every 6 months to check the impellar condition, give you a great idea of what your setup is working, or not!! lol!!

so i finally got the hose, and fitted it today.... good god.... nightmare is not the word....
Its all in however and looks fantastic, once i got over the paranoid person i am and accepted that everything was ok and i didn't F-up and drop some mysterious object in the new intake pipe, i fired her up (wish i wouldn't torture myself like i do). The new pipe is 150% better quality in every single way, once i'd got the ess supplied one out i soon realised i was doing a good thing here, its was literally falling to bits, while all the intake was off i inspected the impeller and im pleased to say its in perfect condition. Right at the very end... a plastic clip sprung off into the depths of my engine bay :-( i was very disappointed lol and searched for around 3 hours for it!!! nope its long gone!!! all in all the new pipe was pretty difficult to work with due to its stiffness, really looks nice and has excellent heat repelling properties Very pleased. i will get the car out of storage now i think as our winter seems to be leaving nice and Early, and get some nice pics as per your request :-) hows things going your side????? :-)

Isn't it fun finding anything you drop - its like a pin ball machine as it falls - I uses to drop something else and watch but stopped that as all you do is add more stuff to the missing list
My silicone fittings aren't here yet and I hope if they fit the way I think I won't have to bend anything to get it where it should be - it will go together in pieces from the filter back and hopefully easily - its hard enough working on these rigs without adding to the trouble with maintenance. I am awfully tempted since I already have all this done to add the upgrade to VT 500 May just take off my wheels and paint my brake calipers red !

Changing intake hoses
Nightmare on my street
There are some pics here - one is before I started and you can see where the flex tubing attaches to the air filter and passes through the radiator shroud. Several people have said it tends to rub where it passes through and can wear through causing all kinds of nasty things to go through your impeller. I ha 2 - 45 degree pieces of silicone and cut them every which way but loose as the angles should have worked to get it from the ESS formed intake to the connector on the filter. Well you can see I cut one as short as I could and still be able to connect them with the metal inside sleeves AND 2 HOURS LATER - not gonna happen. The problem is the 2 45's are the right angle but they move laterally when they meet at the bend - so not as to have a completely wasted night I clamped a 3 " straight hose to the air filter and that is what I will connect the flex pipe to. That will at least mean the 3mm thick silicone hose and the metal clamps are sitting on the pass through where it can't rub through. Hopefully the flex hose if it moves will be free from friction and won't wear 0 suppose I could wrap it after installed with duct tape as its as tough as hell. I left all the clamps and hoses off cause I have some coloured silicone and silicone clamps on the way. Why do we do this shit to ourselves - If I had enough time and the gear I would redesign the whole air intake system but for sure I can change and clean the filter without taking the bumper off

Re-connect
Here is a quik pic of the flex hose reconnected to the silicone hose attached to the air filter and the plastic formed inlet. I put some duct tape on both joints before clamping as the hose is sort of floppy on the fittings even when the clamps are tight and I also put a wrap around that flex to prevent it wearing in the area next to the bottom of the pass through.

this stuff has a liquid matt silver heat repellant coating, it can withstand 300 Deg C, its alot tougher in every way, it was alot more difficult to manipulate due to its plain strength and thickness, my hands are cut to fuck!! poor iphone pics but you get the idea!

Looks great
That is a class install - I am afraid I am function over form - never really care if it looks shit long as it works really well @@
By the way - got the catch can and realized the hose connections are for 3/4 inch hose and the car has 5/8 from the valve cover on - did you just stretch the hose over the fittings OR did you change it all to 3/4. There are so many hoses back and forth now I think I will stick on some blue silicone ones to keep track

Catch can mounting spot
Couldn't find anywhere else to put the stealth catch can from "42" - Was going t o put on a drain hose and a valve but figured I would have to crawl under the car to access the hose = just as easy to take out the plug where it is and let it run into a cup

Is the short, stock one in the picture above also? because it looks like the top one is longer, yet the replacement, the bottom one, is the one you're showing the part number to. Thats why I'm confused
Or do 2 hoses come with that part number? Or do you have to order both seperately?

Sorry for confusing you - the two in the picture are the: the top one is supplied by ESS as part of the kit and it has 3 pieces of pipe fitted together to accomplish the same thing the bottom one ( BMW Part for E46) does it with one!
They both work I suppose but I never use 3 pieces of hose carrying anything when 1 will do. It is actually the same length or a bit longer and fits fine. 2 clamps and you're set.

Catch can mounting spot
Finally got the stealth catch can in - I did put a small valve to replace the plug and it is fairly easy to get to.
The metal strips are just from a hardware store and hold it where it is as the top had to clear both the strut bars going between the towers and back to the firewall.

Looking great!!!!
Tell me what u think about the 42dd can??? They are class IMO... U'll still get a lil oil coming thru but it catches 90% of it... It's impossible to get it all without becoming a serious restriction!!!

Finish catch can installation
Well I had to move the catch can - I guess it doesn't matter if the hoses are up and down but low spots in hoses that may end up having oil vapour sit in them and bugger up the flow isn't on. As well, the fact that the lower fitting on the can goes into the air intake at a weird angle and the other one comes in straight meant the shorter distance was to a lower mounting point.
I ended up putting it over another mounting bolt about 8 inches lower on the inside of the left fender and I can still get at the drain valve pretty easily. Hoses are straight as I can get them - lower one goes in behind the manifold intake pipe. Install - Supercharger, boost gauge and oil catch can done - now a coat of wax and the car cover.
