New Toy...
Now this is one cool unit... I'm tired of giving the dealer $130 every time I wanted to see something.. I started off getting a Bavarian Technic tool, but since it's a beta tool, it's still very limited especially when you deal with Z4s... So I bit the bullet and got the GT1. Wow.. now that's a tool... I've only begun to learn how to use it but the basics are easy... like reading codes, resetting fault codes, turning things on and off... like running lights, alarm systems, etc... I'd recommend it for anyone who's serious about working on their own BMWs... Chuck I

Where did you pick it up at ? Been looking at them online but so many variations. Guess there is a big difference between OEM and China replicas in terms of durability.

I got mine from a guy in Canada. The head and cables are the OEM version made in Germany. The software has been modified to run on any laptop with 30 GB of space.. I had no issues loading it on my laptop. It took about an hour to set it up. It was more expensive than the units made in China.... The whole thing ran about $1200 with the software. I doubt I'll ever recoupe my investment back, but it's sure a lot of fun to play with... Chuck I

Are you able to change the 3 blink option for the turn-signal on and off? If so, that is nearly worth the $1200

Chuck I,
I'm guessing that the software works on multiple (BMW) model cars, not specifically for the Z4? Just thinking if it works on multiple models you could group buy with other Bimmer owners. Dave

Another thing..
I have a couple of friends who don't have the alarm system in their cars but want the light on the mirror to flash... The dealer says they can't do it... I think you can from looking at the coding... So we're going to try it tomorrow... Chuck I

It works on just about everything..
The GT1 works with just about everything except the real new cars with the optical connections. It's the same unit most dealers use. The easiest way to see what it does is to go to ebay and put in "GT1 BMW". There a bunch on there and they all have the description of what vehicles are covered... Chuck I

... why? It only cost $35 for a dealer to do it here. Now if you can change it to 5 blinks instead of just 3 that would be something I would be very interested in!

The answer is Yes You Can!
This morning we used the GT1 to turn on the alarm system indicators without an alarm system.. When you lock the car remotely, the lights blink one time and the clowns nose starts flashing red. When you unlock, the lights blink two times. So don't let the dealer tell you it can't be done. I'm sure that if everyone knew the system could do this, some probably wouldn't buy the alarm system... It's not that I don't ever drive without my seatbelt, mostly I do wear it. What really gets me is that I can't have anything as lite as my laptop computer in the passenger seat without the car giving me those stupid 111 beeps (yep - i've counted them!). Also, my driveway is 1000' long. I stop on my way home at the mailbox to grab the mail, then, if I don't refasten my seat belt, it beeps. I'm pretty sure I can navigate up my driveway without the safety harness & still be safe.
