FYI - DKF section 1 vibration

Do you have a mysterious vibration?

I had a minor vibration issue that occurred this week.
It was mainly noticeable at idle.

When investigating, I found that the welds for the tabs that joined the two S pipes in the section 1 had failed on one side.
This allowed the tab to vibrate against the pipe.

The quick fix was to just bend the tabs up a bit to give them more clearance to the pipe.

Might be something to address in the off season.
If you have someone that can do a bit of TIG its a quick fix.

It can be done on car as the missing welds are on the bottom side.

Same thing happened to me, I just pulled the tabs off. It's obviously possible to just have them re-welded properly.

Do they need to be connected together?
RE pipes are not, and they seem fine to me.

no they don't need to be connected.
It was superposed to be an enhancement that reduced drone by joining the pipes.

On the plus side its likely easier to align things.

Do you have the resonated pipes or the ones with cats? When I bought the use set of resonated DKF pipes the preview owner had removed the welds, and I was getting a strange vibration/rattling at certain RPMs. I had a muffler shop weld the sections back together and haven't had an issue since.

The perforated metal sheets inside the resonators on my set appeared to be unfixed, so I'm thinking the pipes not being welded allowed for too much lateral flex under load, which caused the rattling. I'm not sure if those sheets were like that by design, but that was my situation.

I'm running CATs.

Just got back from a track day and noticed more exhaust noise (different) on the way home.
May be similar to you, I'll investigate further today.

Which was a big plus with the RE. The fit's a little iffy.

Update

OK I just put the car on the hoist & here's what I found.

This area looked fine when I bent the tab up for clearance.
The weld break obviously weakened or tore away part of the pipe wall.
After running all day at the track it finally popped through.

Looks like I'll be taking it in to get the welds re-welded.

Wow. Hope Doug never uses that weld shop for ANYTHING ever again if he's got more projects in the pipeline. Hope this all gets worked out easily for you!

I purchased my DKF S1 second hand and before installing, noticed a crack in one of the welds. I had it re-welded and installed, but I wonder if this is an issue that may come back. Maybe this is caused by the cross braces holding the pipes too much in one place, not allowing for flex of fitment of aftermarket components, temp change, etc. Sorry to see it broke though inTgr8r, thanks for posting up.

I think DKF is done.

I have someone that can do a bit of TIG for me, the worst part is that it will have to come off the car. .....again lol

Thaaaaat sucks... At least you found out what the culprit was, though. I'll take an identified problem with a known solution over an unknown one any day of the week.

Agreed!
I hate those needle in a haystack type problems, I'll deal with ones like this any day.

I was running the section one with resonators only and went through two sets before I gave up on the whole thing and got a super sprint section one lol . The resonators were disintegrating on track in short order lol.

Would you say the exhaust gained any level of sound from installing the s pipe with 300Cell cats?
