So I'm planning on adding a black mat vinyl side skirt graphic to my coupe. I don't want to buy a pre-made one on Ebay since i want the vinyl to follow exactly the highlight on my aero side skirts.

So my plan is to buy a sheet of vinyl and use knife-less tape to cut it. Wondering if anyone has used this method and whether it cuts a clean line or not. Feedback appreciated. Excuse the bad photoshop image (quick and dirty)

My vinyl guy uses it and swears by it. It's a bit to master using though and mentioned that the different types of vinyl need slightly different techniques when using it. I'd suggest a practice sheet of the same vinyl and jump in.

Check out this link. Allows you to layout your design before you even lay the vinyl

Interesting.
Reminds me of "fine line" tape we used to use to lay down the start of a masking job.
There would be a technique to "cutting" the edge of the vinyl so as not to leave a feathered edge.

I work with vinyl day in and day out. Knifeless Tape is definitely the way to go. Can be a pain in the but to get it started sometimes but once you get it going it cuts the vinyl very nicely. They've got a few different versions though so watch which one you buy.

For example:
Window perforation tape (window perf cuts)
Design line (you'll want this to draw the shape with the tape)
Finish line (mostly for straight cuts)

Didn't realize there were different kinds. I got this one. Hopefully it's the right one.

Yeah that's finish line. Mostly designed for straighter cuts. It won't be able to turn back on itself very well, but you may still be able to get a decent angle out of it. Best example to give someone when comparing the two non-perf tapes is for them to draw a flame graphic on the car with each and see how the design line lays down better in the curves. you may be okay for the shape you want to do on the side skirts though.

Well I lucked out and got a 60 deg day today. It was just warm enough to put the vinyl on. I must say the tape was pretty easy to use. I messed up once but I had enough vinyl to finish the job. Either way, it was better than buying the pre-made stuff that didn't quite track with the body lines. I'm considering this mod a success. Now on to the next one!

Nice job. What do you estimate it cost you to do this in total?

Here's the supplies i needed

1) Knifeless tape from Amazon $17
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2) 3M black mat vinyl (5 ft x 2 ft) from Amazon $30
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3) BMW M performance graphic from eBay $12
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-BMW-M-Perf...bPjytg&vxp=mtr

So about $60 total.....I suspect it would be alot more if you hired a vinyl guy to do it.

Its nice to have a squeegee used for vinyl wrapping jobs. I already had one from when i did my roof. Not necessary though, only like $5

Holy. Crap.

That was very cool. I've been playing with some vinyl and this is much better than using a knife and hoping I don't F up the paint.

Way cool.
