I tried to register, but I am not able to enter my car info. Takes me straight to the where was your car sold.

It makes it easier for someone to match up you to your car (they could do so anyway by going through the DMV and paying a small fee). The VIN isn't a private number (it's freely and openly displayed on your dash for anyone to walk by and jot down).
