Thumbs down Outrageous BMW Prices

I dropped off my car for servicing this morning and had time to check out the showroom for a bit. I couldn't believe the pricing on some of the BMWs they had there! $53,198 for a modded 2011 135i CP (marked down from $56,063 in a "red tag sale") and $54,971 (regularly $60,931) for a 2010 328i CP. What are they smoking??? Might as well get a 1M or M3 for those prices.

2011 BMW 135i CP - 41,175
BMW Performance wheels - 4,990
BMW Performance steering wheel - 2,995
Diffuser CF cover - 1,795
Strut brace - 1,395
Rear CF spoiler - 1,299
CF mirror covers - 999
CF grills - 795
Pin-striping - 495
Floor mats - 125
TOTAL - 56,063

2010 BMW 328i CP - 45,225
BMW Performance wheels - 3,926
BMW Performance suspension - 3,285
BMW Performance exhaust - 2,739
BMW Performance steering wheel - 1,666
Brake kit - 1,491
Front mount (?) - 1,169
Air intake - 1,035
CF grills - 795
BMW Performance shifter - 475
Floor mats - 125
TOTAL - 60,931

^well, the base msrp of those cars seem in-line with bmw's increased pricing (read somewhere that was the general consensus for fiscal 2012) and both are heavily optioned with super-pricey bmw performance parts. i mean, $3000 for a steering wheel??? outrageous. $800 for carbon fiber grills???

BMW performance mods aside, cars have gotten really expensive. Previous generation bimmers were significantly cheaper.

I'm in a 2011 328i xDrive loaner this week. The sticker in the glovebox shows MSRP of $44K.

Buy a 3-year old CPO; they'll be half those prices. No idea why ANYONE would buy a brand new one unless they like to lose money immediately.

I could not agree more with this statement -- cars have become very expensive, and the reality (for me, at least) is that I'll have to wait until they are CPO material before I make a move. I miss picking options and color combinations, but the reality is I simply can't do that anymore

Buying the '00 M5 new was an amazing experience, especially the BMW Performance Center in SC. It's a great time, but things just keep going up in price, it's crazy.

Re-affirmation of my outlook that people who buy new cars are suckers, or just rich enough not to care. If you're into driver's or luxury cars, then buying a 3-5 year old, low mileage car is the only way to go. If all I cared about was point-A-to-B driving, I'd buy 8-year-old Japanese mid-mileage cars and call it a day.

I drive 35-39k miles per year. I could never buy new because the car would be out of warranty long before I paid it off. Besides, as it's been stated several times here, the 3 y.o. CPO's are the best value. I have two (X5 and Z4) that combined have lower monthly payments than a new 3-series. Both are in great shape.

You should check out the prices in Canada, which are substantially higher than US prices, even though the US and Canadian dollars are now on par. The differences are so substantial that it amazes me that BMW dealerships up here can sell a car at all. I'd expect folks to just import their cars from the US and save thousands per car. Like I did.

I paid half the price of what my M cost when it was brand new! Such a good feeling...especially since the car is now worth more than what I originally paid for it. I've NEVER been in a situation like this before. Fn LOVE IT!
