It's like the screen is burnt from the outside. Not sure what caused it. The car is always in the garage and rarely goes out these days. Even then I usually have the screen closed.

I'm thinking maybe something I used to clean it. However I have always always used the same stuff. Unless maybe I used a towel that I accidentally used for something else. Other than that it looks and works fine.

Really kinda pissed about it because I just ordered a bunch of parts to try to fix some of the minor cosmetic issues and get it as nice as possible and then I see this.

That is good news. I was figuring the whole unit would need replacing. Too bad they don't make a higher resolution version as a replacement.

Me too! I have only seen the whole unit for sale. Even used it was like $500.

Could you let me know where you can buy the screen? Also is there some diy on how to replace it?

Thanks!

Facelift monitor is usually less easy to get hold of (pre facelift monitor is different color!)

But I think you can best replace the seperate screen with an e46 one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E46-E38-...-/201110977907

It's supposed to be a Sharp LQ065T9BR54U

you may want to check your own partnr & connectors with the one in the auction.

TIS has a guide to refit the monitor unit. Use plastic interior trim removal tools to prevent damage to the interior.
Replacement of the screen you have to do yourself, but it's probably straightforeward once you unscrew & open up the monitor unit. Otherwise get some electronics guy to do it when you're not used to open up radio's&electronics.

If you find out the cause of this strange damage, please inform us so that we don't make the same mistake....

Thanks! Gonna look into this.

I was actually car shopping a couple months ago and remember seeing an X5 that was fairly new and it has this exact same issue on the screen, however on that one it was the WHOLE screen.

I doubt it. It was my daily driver for like 2 years, parked outside at work in the FL heat, never had an issue. Now I drive it maybe once or twice a week just for fun, rarely ever sits outside.

The only thing I can think of is something on the towel I used to clean it or maybe something to do with me usually keeping it down. Other than that I have no idea.

if I'm honest it looks like pressure damage, its localised damaged and looks consistant with something thats either struck it or something.

Nothing has hit it, also if you look at it close it looks like it could be caused by heat because its wrinkled not cracked or anything. In fact if you have no light shining in front of the screen and you turn it on you cant see it at all. The underlying screen is perfect, its just the outer screen "film" or whatever it is.

Ok so I decided to pop out the nav to see if I could get to the screen. However take a look at this. Not sure how to proceed.

The entire unit is connected with one bundle that comes from inside the dash and goes inside of the unit so I cannot unplug it.

Of course I then try to open that to see whats in there and see if I can unplug the cable. However those tabs are very brittle and I broke one. Also theres some kind of white stuff visible. I'm not sure if it was sealed with some kind of glue or what but it would not easily open and I'm afraid of breaking it.

Any thoughts?

If I remember correctly from when I retrofitted nav in mine, the cable unplugs at some point behind the headunit. It's pretty easy to reach once you take out the vents and radio (also an easy DIY).
