Heat it up real good with heat gun or hair dryer to soften the glue underneath the shifting pattern plate, and carefully pry the plate out. Sand the contacting surfaces to make them smoother, and glue the plate back on.

Thanks for the DIY. I ordered my shift knob last week and just received it today!

Thanks for the DIY. I just changed out mine and it was easy. I did pull too hard on the leather boot and pulled out the surrounding trim but it turned out to be fine since I released the boot clips from the underside. If that happens, make sure that you check for any retaining clips that might have come off and put them back in place.

Anyone know how to retrofit the wiring needed for a lighted knob?
us 3.0's don't have lighted knobs from factory and I just got a Hartge Illuminated knob. Putting the knob in is no problem, but where can I run the wiring for the light? |

What holds the boot up? My only concern is that it mates cleanly to the bottom of the new knob, and stays put. I'm gonna order that sucka today, the stocker is waaaay too tall.

The ZHP knob and the OEM knob bases both stop at the same spot so the boot will meet both of them just fine. There is nothing holding the boot to the knob. On some M3s I believe the ones with lighted shift knobs the boot and the shift knob are one.

Installed mine today.. great service & price from Tischer.. GO FOR IT guys, this is a major upgrade. The stock knob is waay too tall, this shorty is just right and the fact that it's weighted helps a lot too. And looks completely stock, no one will ever know it's a swap. 3 thumbs up!

Leather Z put mine in along with the M stitched boot - looks great and the performance feels as if you've installed a short shifter - I'm surprised how much of a difference the ZHP knob makes. Great mod (as suggested by others). I'll snap a pick of the boot later and post up.

Unless you replace the OEM knob with a custom lit ZHP knob, the ZHP one I have in the DIY won't light up. I DID eventually have it modded by Starscream and it's been awesome since:
BTW, Starscream was extremely great to deal with, and I can't recommend him enough. Just tell him Rick Hunter sent you, and he'll take care of ya! Last edited by Rick Hunter; 06-04-2009 at 09:30 AM.. |
