Use something with headers.
If you want a plug&play option I believe supersprint is one of the few. But I believe that a good performance exhaust shop can make a better system (maybe with using the supersprint headers&cats); the section 2 from supersprint is single pipe.

That's what the Supersprint system is... Y-pipe to single inlet/outlet muffler. I'm a firm believer in it too.

I am not a strong believer in single pipe, especially not with a non turbo bmw firing order for the I6. And BMW also isn't a strong believer for their more performance orientated models Better double pipe with xflow to improve scavenging.

I've discussed E46 M3 exhaust options with an employee at a highly renouned shop, who could have pretty much any setup he wants, and has almost unlimited technical advice at his disposal. He has a single pipe setup on his stage 2 Active Autowerke M3, because it made the most power for him on a dyno. FWIW... different BMW engine putting out 2.5+ times the horsepower of a stock M54, but that's what worked in his situation.
