How to remove trim...
Hi guys,
I tried removing the driver's side trim panel and chipped an edge off of it. It's minor, but noticeable. Are there detailed instructions on removing it? I took a picture of this retaining pin, but am not sure how to get the trim out. I have the service manual, and it says to use special tool (looks like a plastic card) to shimmy it out of there. I tried with a trim removal tool and, well, chipped it from too much leverage. I did a search for this and found only one small reference to the pins here. Here are pics of the first pin I couldn't get out:

I used a couple of plastic knives by sliding them between the trim panel and the dash.
Slowly push the knife in until you can pry the trim away from the dash. It will pop out, you will likely lose a couple of the retaining clips in the process.

Careful using a butter knife. It can still scratch things. Drivers side trim is easier to remove if you remove the vent to the left of the trim.
Spend $20 and get a set of plastic trim removal tools. Worth every penny. I just finished covering my dash trim with CF dinoc. Planning on tackling the center console this weekend. |

At the end of this thread over on bimmerforums are some pictures in PDFS on how to remove the center trim. HIGHLY recommend taking a look. It covers everything with pictures and makes it a heck of a lot easier. Don't be intimidated by the number of steps. It's not difficult, just takes a while and yes you need to remove the rear console.

3M di-noc is not a good option for wrapping interior trims because it's not as flexible. 3M 1080 is much better and easier to use.
I just wrapped my steering spoke trims with matte black 3M 1080 film and it came out perfect. |

Finally dipped the center console trim yesterday. Removing the center console and storage compartment was actually pretty easy, though it took a lot of time.
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic:
