AAAAAaaahhhh Freak Out!!! (valve adjustment)

What's up people... just wanted to share my experience while adjusting or checking the shims in the ///Z4M.

I'm have a feeling that BMW never checked the valves or shims in my car. I was only able to get a report from the Austin dealership and the reports mentioned an oil leak before I bought it and the engine gasket covert was replace t 20k miles.

Anyhow, to measure the intake side I used .007 of an inch to .009 as the max. All my intake vales were set to allow in .007 and .008 NOT .009 and .011 to .013 for the exhaust side allowing in .011 and .012 NOT .013

To make the story short ALL of my shims were too small, allowing .010 and higher on the intake side and one exhaust valve allowed a .016. This job is not difficult, but it requires that you pay attention and double check your work to make sure is done right!

Below is an FYI video in regards to the retainer or the bracket that keeps the rockers from move to the side.... again, it's just an FYI.

This video was taken the next day after the valves were adjusted. The engine is very smooth now and I honestly feel or hear less rattling coming from the engine.

The vanos does make a little noise, but that's the nature of the beast.

It's got to feel good to DIY and know the job was done right!

Are you interested in selling/renting/loaning your extra shims and tools? I'm in Austin too and need to do my valves at some point soon.

I'd love to compare cars as well.

Hey Dan... I was planning to sell my shin kit once I finished, but the I'm so happy with the way the car feels now that I'm going to keep them and do this job every 15k.

I'll give you two options. You can bring your Z4m to my house and borrow my tools... once you are done just replace the shims you used, or I can bring the shim kit to you and hold the flash light for you while you lend me a beer or two.

Make sure you order this set before anything.

......
It won't need it every 15k

...FWIW, anyone doing shims;
you also need to be cautious about fitting too tight, especially on the exhaust side.
Exhaust valves depend on contact time with the seats for cooling.
too tight = less contact time = overheated exhaust valves.

I'm on 620 North near Highway 45 and 183.

We should put together a lil something to meet up with Z3 and Z4 drivers in Austin.

We definitely should meet up. I'm fairly central.

Kream - I think I saw your car on MoPac a month or 2 ago. We were both headed north at around 8 am. I have a silver coupe. You exited at 2222 if I remember.

Kream - I actually park the beast right infront of that gym...

I'll Send you my cell # later. It would be great if we could get more people to come out once a week just to BS and talk about cars and help each other with fixes/maintenance stuff.

Anyone is Austin is welcome to stop by.

I believe that tight would be a smaller clearance between the shim and rocker (<.007 and <.011). All your numbers are in spec and good so no need to worry. Usually you are either in spec or out of spec due to the standard shim size variations.

Well, one thing for sure is that the engine is way smoother even after passing the 4k rpm mark.... all the way to 8k.

Every time I used to step on it before adjusting the valves, I used to get this unpleasant vibration from the engine that just didn't feel right, but now it just purrrrrrrrrrs all the way.

If know you need it...get it done.
