TPMS on aftermarket wheels - stem too long....

Has anyone else run into this & what did you do about it?

I moved the TPMS onto new wheels & the stem extends beyond the edge of the wheel.
I really don't like it being exposed to potential damage but I guess I'm stuck with it.

AFAIK the only alternative is one of those internal band mounting kits.
Has anyone used these kits?

Have you installed these?
Can they be done externally or do I have to get to the sensor inside?

I ended up just selling mine. They don't do much anyway. Only tell you that pressures have changed from what you manually set as base reference point =/
If they told me exactly what pressures I was at, then I would've definitely kept them, even with the ugly extended stem

^ I agree to a point.
I often do road trips though & with no spare I'd prefer to have a warning that a tire was going down.

haha! so... i have installed them... and then uninstalled them on my 313's. they are the "correct" stems for the stock 335is. what BMW won't tell you though is that stem number won't come with the seal ring needed to space the nut out from the nut seat on the wheel. in other words... the minimum gap on the shorty stem is still larger than the thickness of the style 313 wheel at the nut seat. i just used my old stems which looked ok; they didn't protrude past the rim lip. honestly though, from comparing the two, any crush ring with the appropriate inner and outer diameter would have worked to space it. hell, even an oil drain plug washer probably would work if you didn't mind the copper ring maybe showing through. not only that, the ring may not be required for your wheels, due to a larger seat thickness. also note: the inner diameter of the old stem is smaller than the outer diameter of the shorty stem, meaning the old crush ring is not useable with the new stem. sorry for not ellaborating in my first post about this possible issue for you. don't hurt me. since the stems are so cheap, i suggest heading to a parts store after you get them and buy (or try at the counter if they'll let you) a few different sizes of washers. do NOT get steel washers. you'll regret it if you do. first choice is aluminum, then copper.

you absolutely will have to break the tire down to mount TPM stems. the stems are mounted to the sensor first, slid through the stem hole in the wheel, and tightened with the nut on the outside of the wheel. THEN the tire goes back on and pressures are set. essentially you'll be paying a shop to mount and balance 4 tires. yes, you will have to rebalance the tires because they will not be remounted in the exact same position they were at prior to breaking them down.

get some pics posted soon, we want to see what you installed!

Thanks for the detailed write up!!

I had a closer look, mine are the same as yours; long but not quite past the edge.

I definitely want to fix these, but at least it's OK for now.

here's an update from my experience above (v3.0si)...

the 36146792829 stem does not need any fabrication. the new design has a thicker seal on the stem that goes through the wheel, and the included nut squeezes and self threads over this seal. a bit more torque is required to get them started over the seal in comparison to the older 36111095375. or simply...

the 1095375 had a washer built onto the nut that allowed tightening up against the wheel surface. the 6792829 uses the larger stem seal to perform the same function.

this is updated here as well.

When I mounted my new satin black Apex wheels, I went with a set of these RS-Technik TPMS with valve stems in Black because didn't want to have stock aluminum/silver color messing up the look. System sync'd right up with stock BMW with no issues and I am extremely happy with the look. Even got a great 'first buyer' price, link is below, full set of 4 runs from $180-200 depending on model. BMW price is about $75 per wheel, so about 1/2 price of stock.

I have a LeatherZ spare tire and a kit I put together which includes a Jack, chocks, and some 3 series tools. I throw it in the car on long trips just in case.

I just had tires mounted to a set of APEX EC-7's yesterday and went with the shorter stems (36-14-6-792-829) and no mods had to be done. The original stems were well beyond the outside of the rim (by at least an inch). This was done at the stealer when I was in for oil change and diff fluid change, so of course they asked for a rediculous price of 34 a piece!!!. I went ahead with it (you will probably call me stupid, I know) because the picture I saw of them with the OE stem would have driven me nuts to see for a minute on my car. Anyways, its done and they look amazing.
