Trade-In Value
So I was bored and toyed around with the idea of trading my car in for a new BMW. Probably an M3 or something.
Anyhow, I went through the steps online and asked for a Blackbook appraisal. I put in 2007 Z4MC with 60k miles. *drum roll* I would be eligible for a whopping $20k at best What a joke. |

Blackbook is a great tool for pricing your garden variety family appliance or econobox. It's not so great for anything somewhat exclusive or rare.
For that pricing you need to look at comps on our very small sample. And consider a sale needs the right person at the right time (no quick sales in most cases). If you're really thinking about an M3 or other variant (E90 or similar) pm or text me. Let's talk. |

Planning to part out what you can? Or sell as-is with mark-up? Curious what your strategy might be...

Thats very little for a rare coupe. I was offer 24k last year for my 08 M Roadster if I do a trade in a dealer. Is your M consider still certified pre owned? Not sure if that can make a difference but I know my got every oil, brakes, maintenance, inspections 1 and 2 done at the same dealer since I got it.

I don't know, I don't think that offer is way out of line for a BMW dealer to offer. Consider that they are going to expect to spend 1-2k on the car when the bring it in, and put it out for around $32k. After their expenses, salesman's commission, etc., they're going to make around $7-8k. I would say thats a typical margin for a dealer to get on a used car like this.
Of course, any time you trade in a car, you're going to get way less than a private party sale. |

Look at what EAG is asking lately for Z4MC's. Values are clearly trending upward, if they are any indication (and I think it goes without saying that EAGs prices are a valid indication, if to the high side of value anywhere else). Are you the original owner, fully documented history, no body/paintwork? If so EAG might be a candidate to sell to, you'd definitely do much better than that figure.

From Auto Trader, search anywhere in the U.S., Looks like you there are a number of Z4M's with less than 60k miles, listed for less than $28k. Assuming most of these people will take less. I also think trade of $20k is too low, best case is you sell it yourself. From looking at some of the cars that don't sell here over many months and what is listed on Autotrader I don't believe prices have gone up over the last 3 years since I was looking to buy mine (have owned it for almost 3 years).

There is post on another forum where a guy has a line on an 06 MCoupe for 20k that has just been traded in.
Told him to look at it seriously. That is a great price if all is good with it.

A buddy of mine was trading in his 2008 Alpine White Z4MC at the BMW dealership. The car had 17,xxx miles. They offered him $16,000.

Curious about mark-up (or mark-down) on modded cars? Like if I spent $13,000 in mods, how much of a loss should I expect if I sell as-is? Surely it's worth more than a comparable OEM Z4M. Wasn't Chris Fine's car sold at $50K or something?

It's all about finding the "right" buyer who sees the same value in the mods that you do. Buyers of stock cars are rare enough - buyers that are willing to pay much more to inherit some mods are unicorns. You're probably better off returning it to stock and selling off the added parts. Or, you could get lucky and find that unicorn.

I agree with the above and if you aren't planning on removing the mods when you sell the car then you should plan on getting close to nothing extra for small mods(depending on what it is) and be happy with any extra that you happen to get. I would expect big mods, like a supercharger, will bring some additional over stock but no where close to what it costs. You spend $1500 on wheels, then finding a person that likes them more than stock and is willing to pay significantly more for the car because of them is pretty difficult. Other issue is when the potential owner doesn't share your feelings on the mods so what you spent actually reduces what he thinks the car is worth.

haha well, I know there's depreciation, along with the fact that of course we should never expect to get much of an offer when it comes to trade-ins. But man...that's still a pretty big hit IMHO. I'm just chalking it off as Blackbook not being able to account for rarity, etc.
In any case, I'm not serious about trading in/selling just yet. Need the additional income flow first before I would actually consider it. But that's not to say that if the right offer came long one day, I wouldn't take up on it I think I'm just getting old and moving onto the next stage in my life. I want a comfy, fun sedan or sorts now. Like a stock M3 or maybe even an M5, most likely used. If M3, I'd try to stay away from E9X, as they still have the same rod bearing issues as our S54 motors. All in all though, my car buddies all tell me to just keep the car, and pick up a beater on the side to help preserve the Z4 in the meantime. I think that logic is quite sound |

RE: getting old
My approach wasn't to get a beater, but a nice civilized SAV. In my case, the used X5d I picked up last November. Getting rid of such a pure sports car for a sport sedan is a compromise all around IMO. Now with the Z4M and X5, I haven't compromised the way I feel in the Z4M, and now I have practicality to spare in a torquey, comfortable DD. The ///M sedans aren't practical enough for me.
