The board attachment tool cites 966.8 KB and 1600px as the max dimension (for both h and w).

I just ran through a few tests saving off some of my larger / more color-complicated pictures and even the larger ones (~8MB) shrunk down to 1280 x 8xx seemed to live comfortably under the 966kb threshold (highest I could get at that resolution was in the high 700's). That said, depending on the tool that someone is using they may get varying compression results / end product sizes.

1024 might be a nice fit across the board and fit well within the boards existing capabilities.

At the very least, tools like GIMP (per intoflatlines) and others could be easily linked to / baked into the text that Finnegan uses for the POTM announcement post.

Good work guys! 1024 sounds like a good number; I might set up a poll to see if folks agree. The tools/help should be great for folks who may know how to take a good shot but aren't super digital image tech saavy.

We'll update the instructions/rules before the next POTM. Submissions that fall outside the specs will not qualify for inclusion.

With these changes, we should provide a level playing field for all, increase the richness, decrease the compression artifacts, and make this even more fun.
