100% agree..... my car in vt1 spec would have wasted a csl'd z4m....
vt2?? i owuldnt even waste the petrol...... and for considerably less money.... i cant argue with the csl sound though, one of the very best, but the s/c noise is as cool in its own way....

It's worth it if you are in some race class that doesn't allow forced induction...other than that, not at all

To each their own - many people don't want to go the forced induction route, want to push their engines as far as they can as NA units, or may compete under rules where forced induction is not allowed, but modifications to the airbox are. Just depends on the person and situation. To many people, the fact that we have these cars, let alone spend time/money modifying them, is a complete waste of money. Don't be so quick to generalize.

we're generalizing that this mod's purpose is to make power on the street, and in this situation, its a bad return on investment

There are S54s in E46s with it
Not everyone who is concerned with making more horsepower is concerned with making "the most" horsepower. Last edited by BTM; 09-21-2011 at 04:50 PM.. |

But there are Alpha N capable tunes for the Z4M too (Evolve has one starting at $800). I don't know that the E46M3 is "easier" to tune, it's been out much longer, with much greater production numbers, meaning that there is more readily available for it from a tuning standpoint. Both cars are obviously capable of being tuned....
I'm not saying it's cheap or easy power. If maximum power is what you're after, then you'll get there more effectively through forced induction. But writing something off as a "waste of money" just because it's not something you personally aren't interested in pursuing, or haven't seen done on a Z4M, is a very one-sided perspective. I just never got the mentality to discourage something without having all of the information about it. I don't have the details regarding cost, tuning, or gains, but it's been done on a Z4M before Edit for more pics of the CF car: Originally posted here Last edited by BTM; 09-21-2011 at 05:21 PM.. |

Any info on the above pics BTM? My google-fu failed me.
I'm one of those that might be interested in a mod like this. I like the beauty of keeping the car naturally aspirated, for me it's about engineering. But we all know power is addicting, no matter how much power you get, eventually you get used to it and want more.

All I know about that car is that it's a one-off kit. It was at Fall-Line where BMWCCA Windy City had a meeting this spring, where they said it weighs about 2600lbs with its driver. If memory serves, a shop in Milwaukee did the bodywork. They split us into groups which got sort of confusing so I missed the station where they talked about it.
If you're serious, I'd contact Fall-Line and they could give you more info or let you know who to get in contact with. |

FWIW, here's a link to a group buy for the Evolve carbon fiber airbox
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=368232 Didn't read all 83 pages to see if anyone was trying it with a Z4M, or if it was addressed at all |

Not ready to do it now, but thanks for the info. Right now i'm saving for euro headers/cats.
Edit: thanks for posting the thread, saw that you asked about Z4M too, good deal.

I'd say the sound of the AFE or the better Grouppe M intake is VERY close to the csl growl, if thats what you're after

^^^ Except if u ever do headers/exhaust you can forget about 99% of that sound, because the former will drown it out
