RE Transmission Mounts and SSK Installed!
I just finished up installing RE tranny mounts and an RE SSK. It definitely improves the feel. Seems to be crisper, but the throws don't feel that much shorter (if at all).
Installing the mounts was pretty easy, aside from tightening the nut where the mount connects with the transmission. I did those last night and couldn't get it very tight because the space was so small. Today I put in the SSK and had to remove the exhaust, so I had more room to tighten everything up. Overall, I would definitely recommend these!

did you tighten the mounts to Tq spec??? how are you guys getting a Tq wrench up in that space to Tq up properly?? Props for having a go yourself and no paying stupid prices for a garage to do it!!! SSK are not easy to install from what ive seen!!

Yeah, the SSK was a pain. It took us 4 hours. Taking the exhaust down and getting the rubber boot that seals the shifter into place were the two most time consuming parts. Luckily my friend who does a lot of work on cars helped out (he does corvettes and was pretty shocked at how tightly our cars are packed in). Worth skipping out on paying someone else to do it and its a nice hobby.
As far as the torque specs go, I didn't get a torque wrench up there. I just tightened them until it wouldn't tighten anymore. I figured since the transmission sits on them and the brace is bolted up the the body tightly, there would be enough force to keep them from creeping out.

Tight enough is probably just fine. (There's really no practical way I could find to use a torque wrench on the top side nuts. Maybe I'm missing the boat). It's 16 ft lbs, which isn't much. There will be excessive vibration with too much torque (causing too much compression of the mounts).

While I was driving today, I found that in reverse the SSK contacts the driveshaft. I can hear the metal resonating and as revs increase the shifter starts the vibrate.
Is this slight contact something I should be overly concerned with?

I just sent a note off to RE to see how we can resolve this issue. Luckily their company is based right near my house in NJ. I'm thinking that the pivot point was misplaced during manufacturing. It looks like there are several different notches to change the pivot location (maybe for different model cars?).

Removed the SSK
After being stranded in Pittsburgh at 1 am due to the shifter linkage coming apart a few weeks ago, and then being charged $426 to replace a 75 cent clip because I desperately need it fixed that day and didn't have access to a lift, I have decided to remove the RE SSK.
As I mentioned earlier, the kit touches the drive shaft in reverse and the noise has gotten progressively louder it seems. The kit has also become progressively sloppier as it seems to be loosening. RE said the contact is normal "at extreme angles" and after asking for the clearance specs between the bottom of the shifter and the shaft I stopped receiving a response from their company. The dealer (A&L Motors in Pittsburgh) told me that the clip most likely loosened due to the contact and vibrations--RE denies that this is a possibility. Obviously did not have a pleasant experience with the company... A couple hours and $2.00 later, I have the stock shifter back in the car.

Sorry to hear that. For what it's worth, I have the UUC SSK and Option 1 mounts and love the way it feels on the car. If you can deal with the long shipping times and sometimes rude customer service UUC is known for I say switch up to that.

absolutly would not expect the ssk contact i agree with your decision and im kinda dissapointed with REs repsonse...... Are they really saying its acceptable for the shifter to touch the prop shaft at extreme angles?? crazy, and dangerous imo..... Poor show RE.

Yeah I couldn't believe it either. And it's sort of embarrassing reversing out of a spot in a parking garage and having a loud ringing coming from my car.

Seriously give AS a call, they might make another batch for Z4s. A great AS review here (compared to RE & UUC): http://m3.madrussian.net/review_as_ssk.shtml |

That is terrible, it really shouldn't be touching your drive shaft. If you decide to install the auto solutions one, please post a review.
Nice review dubbed, that site is filled with good stuff. SSKs have come up a few times on here but that's the first review I've seen from someone that has tried all of them.

They are expensive if you can't get a GB together but the product itself is fantastic!!! It made a huge improvement with shifting; MUCH more precision and feel.

Also if you do go for the autosolutions SSK, check out this thread. Maybe ask him to supply chamfered bushings. I think the bushings he supplies are made for his selector rod, however on the Z4M you reuse the stock selector rod, so the bushings don't fit perfectly unless you chamfer them. Was that your experience as well intgr8r?

^yes, but it was a very minor thing to do.
It was a good thing that someone figured this out because it made a big difference in fitment.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions guys. I'll be looking into the AS one since so many people have had bad experiences with UUC. When I finally get around to buying it and installing I'll compare it to RE.
